Mojo Video of the Week 17 Jul, 2011 / 4 comments

This week's pick is a twelve-minute special on LucasArts that G4 Tech TV aired in the 2002-2003 area. Furnishing employment for the zaniest narrator ever, this video features interviews with a pre-assassination Simon Jeffrey, Mary Bihr, Dave Grossman, Sean Clark, and Mike Stemmle. Apparently those last two are respectively working on a Full Throttle and Sam & Max sequel, so that's exciting, though I didn't know Tim Schafer made The Curse of Monkey Island.

Clap-clap, Logic. The sad thing is that LucasArts has wound up more or less following the lead of the guy whose name is atop the company stationary; more notable for having inspired an entire generation of game designers and fans than they are for the majority of their recent original creative offerings.

It would be nice if someone could show this video to the fine folks at LucasFilm at Comic Con this year!

This rekindles some sadness. The "dependable N number of people" who would have kept buying LEC adventure games evidently seemed worthless in the eyes of execs who were discovering the blockbuster potential of games. Rather than explore different game-types while maintaining this creative passion for original titles, they ditched the baby with the bath-water. The LEC adventures aren't great because they are adventure games. They're great because of the originality, character, imagination etc that pumps through their veins. That idea must be completely lost on certain people who have been in positions of power in LEC over the years.

We may all have lost hope long, long ago, but the company could re-invent itself any time. It has the resources. For crap sake, Lucaspeeps, get interested in making some fucking art and stop wasting the incredible opportunity that faces you on a daily basis! Take some risks. Hire and back some visionaries. Otherwise, you might as well not exist.

I'm done. Back to reality. *ahem*

LOL. "We lost a bit of the focus... that had made us the kind of company that people really rallied around, and were excited about."

... while a clip of "Masters of the Teras Kasi" plays. Tragic irony, or poetic foreshadowing?
