LEGO Monkey Island—A Good Idea? 27 Jan, 2024 / 3 comments

There’s an official LEGO site called LEGO IDEAS, which is exactly what you’d expect it to be: A place where people can post ideas for future LEGO products. If the idea reaches 1,000 (update: 10,000) votes, it will be reviewed by the LEGO Illuminati and potentially become the real deal. I admittedly know Jack about LEGO, but elTee does, and he excitedly posted this little gem (not to Mojo, but… ¬¬):

Even got the idols!

If that’s not enough to sell you, check out this video:

That’s right, the sucker opens.

The set has 259 votes at the time of writing, but after being Mojoed, I think it’s safe to say this will happen within the next two years or so. Go vote

Update! As pointed out by gdeligne in the comments, the LEGO idea requires 10,000, not 1,000 votes. What’s an extra zero amongst friends anyway?

LEGO©™ is all petty lawyers, nuclear copyright wars, branded merch and absurd pricing these days. If I want a second largest monkey head that opens, I think I have some sculpey lying around somewhere. If I make the thing myself, Guybrush even has an off chance to look like himself. ;)

No offense to the creator, they did a marvellous job. But if this ever comes to pass, Lego officials will butcher the concept, reduce the 500 piece idea to 200 pieces, then sell the butchered version for 200$ and more. That's what "LEGO IDEAS" is all about.

The best thing is that if this becomes real we could then get a LEGO Monkey Island game. Next logical step after that would be Muppet Monkey Island

It actually requires 10,000 votes before the LEGO Group will consider making it into a set, not 1,000. I think this is a nice initiative and I would certainly buy a range of Monkey Island themed LEGO sets. However, I don't think this particular IDEA model will ever become a final product due to the overall simplistic design. We'll find out in a year and a half.
