Escape from Monkey Island available on GOG; you're welcome 19 Jun, 2018 / 16 comments

When Mojo speaks, the gaming glitterati listens.

After our hard-hitting podcast, GOG picked up the phone, and made possible what a few years ago would seem baffling: Every LEC adventure game is now available for purchase. That's right, Escape from Monkey Island is on GOG.

The only downside is that it's PC only. That makes sense, though, as Residual's comparability with it is still not ready for prime-time. At any rate, if you're a Windows user, run and buy, and see if you agree with our aforementioned Escape from Monkey Island podcast.

(And you can, of course, buy it for other platforms, and bang your head against Residual.)

    Hey Remi,

How many peg legs do we need to polish to get you guys to do another podcast so Steam gets the message and releases EMI for us mac users??

I'm playing the GOG version of EMI with a Macbook Pro. Just use Wine and everything will work like a charm.

Other than that, I don't think we'll be seeing an official Mac version on GOG or Steam until Residual is more stable.

I'll give this game another shot, now that it's on GOG. I'm not expecting much though. I've played through it at least 4 times in the past and I'm always left annoyed by the experience. My main issues with the game are...

1/ The dilution of the pirate theme. Lawyers, a Starbucks proxy, attending school lessons and tourism are not things that I want from a pirate adventure. I know that the theme of the story is the commercialisation of the Tri-Island area but it's a stupid direction to take the series in, in my opinion.

2/ The way that the game completely messes up Melee Island. Nothing looks the same. They couldn't even get the location of the Scumm Bar correct. I simply don't understand the thought process behind these design decisions.

3/ Monkey Kombat. No elaboration needed.

4/ The nonsensical retcon of Herman Toothrot.

5/ The secret of Monkey Island is a giant robotic monkey? F**k off! The anachronisms of the series were very well established prior to this. Vending machines and the like; basically technology which exists within the 20th centuary. I don't recall any gigantic robotic monkeys during the 20th centuary! Heck, I haven't even seen any now that it's the 21st centuary. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention?

6/ The graphics. How are these hideous graphics a step up from The Curse of Monkey Island? Answer; they're not. They're a massive downgrade. Even The Secret of Monkey Island looked better than this and that was a decade earlier!

7/ The puzzles; a few decent ones but an awful lot of headache inducing annoyances.

I still remember reading a review of Escape From Monkey Island back when it first came out, in the magazine PC Gamer; it said (and I'm paraphrasing here) "we reviewed The Curse of Monkey Island quite highly upon its release but let's face it, in hindsight, it was not a good game. However, we're pleased to say that The Escape From Monkey Island is a true return to form and happily sits alongside the first two games". How's that hindsight working out for you now, PC Gamer? You bunch of clueless nimrods.

Anyway, rant over. I digress; like I said, I'll give the game another shot but I think that we all know what the outcome will be.

While it's cool that the most forgettable Lucasarts adventure game is available finally again, I actually tried the demo of EfMI a few weeks ago with ResidualVM after listening to the Mojo podcast and I couldn't finish the demo because it's so bad, and looks really rough. Time has certainly not been kind to the game as it was already an ugly game when it was released originally since the engine was meant for the style of game that Grim was and not for a game like Monkey Island.

Also playing the demo brought all the bad memories back of playing the game through 18 years ago. Still would like my 300 Finnish marks back that I paid for it back then.

Maybe like the news story of sending in the replacement disks mailer from Secret of Monkey Island, I'll write a post about me drinking whatever is in the bottle. :D

This EMI hater still bought it.
Man, my EMI grog/beer bottle still hasn't been opened and has been on my shelf ever since the games original release. Maybe like the news story of sending in the replacement disks mailer from Secret of Monkey Island, I'll write a post about me drinking whatever is in the bottle. :D

Do you think this is Disney's subtle way of saying there won't be a special/remastered/updated edition?

Otherwise, great news that the entire series is available again!

Finally! This game is so underated. But now what? whats left to look forward to with MI?

We can still dream of Ron's Monkey3a.
It's never gonna happen, but at least it keeps MI alive.

I also think some other side games like Outlaws could make for interesting episodes, given that there aren't that many Lucas adventures to begin with.

Outlaws is one of the only FPSs I actually like. Not sure how much there would be to say about it, though that's not really a bad thing either . . .

Well okay, your propaganda (marketing?) campaign has succeeded Mojo, I'll be playing it again and I finally listened to the podcast. It's good stuff! I'd love to hear more, especially about the more obscure stuff. The in-depth behind the scenes stuff has always been Mojo at its best. Maybe tackle some more of the less talked about titles? Your shared dislike of Zak made me imagine a very interesting talk after all of you are forced to play it to completion, without a guide..

This will finally give EMI a boost in reputation.
It's a shame how badly it gets bashed, it had problems and all but it was overall a great adventure game, just a sub par Monkey Island.
It wasn't well received in 2000 either, but throughout the years it earned more hate than it deserved.

Hah, both of those have been already in GOG a long time ago. Time to buy!

Wow, so the worst Monkey Island game is now finally also available digitally.

Next then Outlaws and Afterlife to GOG, that would be awesome.
