A Massive Star Wars game is coming 13 Jan, 2021 / 5 comments

Not surprisingly, EA has been kicked to the curb – thankfully, after the yawn fest that was Fallen Order – and Ubisoft/Massive has taken the mantle. A teaser for a new “story-driven, open-world Star Wars adventure” has been announced:

There’s a short interview which says very little, so we’ll see what happens next. Personally I’d be into a good Star Wars game that aspires to be more than painfully average.

What ... is this nonsense. Jedi: Fallen Order was literally the first playable Star Wars game since Knights of the Old Republic.

And the last thing this world needs, whatever the franchise, are more yawn fest Ubisoft open world games "with online content".

    Kroms

    (2) X-Wing or whatever. Pew pew pew.

    (4) A VR game about the Force.

That will be (2) Star Wars: Squadrons, and (4) Star Wars: Jedi Battles and/or Star Wars: Vader Immortal and/or Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge.

Nothing ever ends. We're stuck in the childhoods of everyone who grew up in 1977 America for the end of time. But hey, if Sam and Max can recover from a case of the marketplace realities, it was inevitable Star Wars would do the same. Wild guesses for the slew of Star Wars stuff we'll get (not limited to whatever it is Massive Entertainment's doing):

    (1) KOTOR 3 or remake. (I think maybe those games are too old for a remaster, but I wouldn't know, and a remake would spin heads. Even I was tempted to try them.)

    (2) X-Wing or whatever. Pew pew pew.

    (3) Mandalorian game. I just Googled "Mandalorian spin-off" on jaded intuition, and there are three. I can't imagine someone hasn't pitched that. Open world would fit. (I think. I've never seen The Mandalorian and doubt I will.)

    (4) A VR game about the Force.

    (5) War game. (Will probably read as propaganda to me, as Rogue One and every military FPS does.)

    (6) Something like the Witcher, Shadow of Mordor, or newer Assassin's Creed games with Jedi. Obi-Wan and Anakin/walkin' 'round a planet/Laughin' back and forth/At what the other'ne has to say...Reminiscin', This-'n'-thattin'/Havin' such a good time/Oo-de-lally, Oo-de-lally/Golly, what a day.

Inevitably, one game will be deconstructive in a way the fandom is blown away by (but which I'll find trite), and one game will be really traditional (but which I'll also find trite).

My jaded self aside, at least someone out there will enjoy whatever slew of Star Wars games they put out. It's not like this comes at the expense of anything new and original.

Well, I liked Fallen Order and Squadrons a lot, and the new Battlefront games were good too - though the second mired in issues, of course.

I don't think it was a good decision to let EA just run the whole show, and I want to see what a broader stable of Star Wars devs are capable of... but honestly, this is probably the most consistently decent run of Star Wars games to come out since the 90s, and I'm glad most of those are likely getting sequels.

EA wasn't kicked to the curb, the LucasHeads just finally realized that Star Wars--at least in the post-Mando timeline--is back to being big enough to support cross-media industrialization, and they can bend their existing exclusivity deal around properties which didn't fall under the EA contract when it was originally minted (That High Republic's just so damn hot right now).

Fallen Order II and BFIII are still slated for '21 and '22 and Squadrons (which is by far the best thing to come out of EA's monopoly) is apparently getting some love with a sequel, too.

Though it does say a lot about the godawful state of SW gaming that Ubi--a company which is easily afloat in the same chumbucket of over-processed annual franchise releases and MTX-based buffoonery as EA and 2K--actually seems like the LESSER of the available evils, right now. Looking forward to seeing what Massive does with it, since the DIV2 was pretty dang great.
