What We Want To Hear 18 Jun, 2009, 08:41 / 33 comments

According to LucasArts' Brooks Brown, via Kotaku:
"If this sells, there's no one at this company who doesn't want to do these games. It's a matter of showing that there's interest and this market is alive and get people as excited as possible about Monkey Island Special Edition to show that these things can make it."
So, simply put: if Monkey Island Special Edition sells, we get more special editions. Nothing is planned right now, but they do want to do it. If that "marketplace realities" thing is false, LucasArts will continue making adventure games.

Someone hold back Bad Asp.

Still makes no sense to me that Xbox is the only console getting SOMI:SE love.
  • Laserschwert on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:31…
Well, it was pretty clear that it was coming on the PC, as it was developed there, and what's the closest thing to the PC to develop for? Right, the Xbox. Maybe if all goes well, the other consoles are getting some love too later (I'm on PS3 myself).
  • The Tingler on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:24…
Yeah, especially with the Wii getting Indy Fate of Atlantis.
  • jp-30 on 19 Jun, 2009, 03:24…
I guess all the new audio makes Wiiware prohibitive. But there's no reason not to make a boxed Wii version, even if it's only sold from the LucasArts website.
  • Udvarnoky on 20 Jun, 2009, 00:53…
I doubt audio has much to do with it - Telltale has proven that you can cram tons of dialog lines into a Wiiware game, and Strong Bad was made before the (presumed) size increase. I'm guessing it had more to do with the convenience of the Xbox architecture being the closest, relatively, to the PC. Could be wrong though.

So if I pay for a remake of a game I already own, I'll get remakes of more games I already own?
  • Thrik on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:18…
Yes. Got a problem with that?
  • Hümmelgümpf on 19 Jun, 2009, 05:42…
Not really. I just don't understand why everyone is praising LA for milking their old franchises for more money so much. Not to mention the art style of the remake that looks even worse than the one in Telltale's MI game. I don't want other games to get this kind of treatment.

None at all, as long as they're all as ugly and broken-looking at SMI:SE!
  • jp-30 on 19 Jun, 2009, 03:27…
    Oooooh, tough crowd.

And you can bet there will be many fan-made Guybrush hair mod released.
  • Thrik on 19 Jun, 2009, 09:11…
I don't see what all the negativity is about, personally. The Special Edition looks absolutely fantastic to me, with literally the only thing I'm not so keen on being the hair on Guybrush's in-game sprite.
  • Udvarnoky on 20 Jun, 2009, 00:58…
Indeed, LEC's efforts have to be commended. They clearly put real work into this, even if every minute decision regarding a specific character sprite isn't pleasing everybody.

Also, I love how we're suddenly complaining about LEC milking their old adventure franchises when that's precisely what we've been clamoring for them to do for ten years.

The success of this game will be the leading factor in whether or not LEC continues to pursue their old adventures any further. Don't be the reason that doesn't happen by not buying this.
  • bakana on 20 Jun, 2009, 11:39…
A specific character sprite? How about all of them? Guybrush's might be the most egregious (and I'm not sure why people seem to think this is a minor problem, as he's the *protagonist*), but the redesigns of Elaine and LeChuck are also major steps downward from their depictions in the original version.

I'm not even going to touch the fact that a cartoony style totally doesn't fit the aesthetic of the early MI games, and just reiterate that THIS PARTICLAR cartoony style is pretty much uniformly ugly, and poorly executed.

Wow, I was almost prophetic in my reader recollection in the CMI article:

"Some may think it's blasphemous to say, but I'd love to see the other Monkey Island games remastered with the CMI art, music and voice treatment. I mean no disrespect to the artists of the other games (and in fact, I'd love to see CMI given the Monkey Island 1 & 2 treatment), but Escape from Monkey Island would have been infinitely more enjoyable for me if it had the 2D art and animation of Bill Tiller & company. Even better, I'd love CMI to get the HD treatment like Capcom gave Street Fighter II. CMI in high def? Not that I need any more reason to play it again, but come on, who wouldn't want to see that?"

I know the SE isn't in CMI style, but still, I had no clue they were planning to update the art at all. If this SE does well, and they make the second, I would HOPE all they do for CMI is up the resolution/color depth, and maybe increase a few animation frames.

I'm doing my part! Bought a shirt and pre-ordered Tales. Will grab SE the day it comes out and probably gift it to at least one person!
  • Icebox on 18 Jun, 2009, 14:54…
I think this is one case where piracy is unacceptable.
  • jp-30 on 18 Jun, 2009, 19:53…
As opposed to the other cases where it's fine?
  • The Tingler on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:23…
Or was that a clever Monkey Island/pirating joke?
  • neon_git on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:57…
If there's one kind of piracy I hate, it's software piracy.
  • Gabez on 18 Jun, 2009, 22:30…
Perhaps on the rare occasion that pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy, piracy itself can be the right course? (No.)

    WHO DOESN'T LOVE JONATHAN PRYCE?
  • Capn_Nacho on 18 Jun, 2009, 14:16…
BUT I WANT A BOXED COPY
  • neon_git on 18 Jun, 2009, 20:58…
Yeah, I'm with you on that one. Still, beggars can't be choosers and all that.
  • Capn_Nacho on 18 Jun, 2009, 22:15…
    TRUE
  • tfarr on 18 Jun, 2009, 14:05…
Damn... I'd gladly buy 10 copies of SMI:SI if it means more special editions!

I never thought I'd be buying anything from the LucasArts store again... but I just finished ordering the two t-shirts and the poster. Pride has been swallowed.
  • Bad Asp! on 18 Jun, 2009, 11:43…

    LucasArts is the new LucasArts!
  • Kroms on 18 Jun, 2009, 09:04…
So you better buy the goddamn game, you punks. Those who torrent, shall die. Yeah.
  • Izzy on 18 Jun, 2009, 12:36…
People of the Mojo community.BUY THIS GAME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU WANT A MI2 SPECIAL EDITION GAME!
  • bakana on 19 Jun, 2009, 01:25…
I'd really rather they keep their awful art style as far away from (probably) the best game in the series as possible.

Tales of Monkey Island is already bought, but there's no way in hell I'm buying this ugly nonsense...
