There Will Be No-One To Stop Battlefront III This Time 13 Jun, 2013 / 10 comments

At the E3 Gaming Expo, EA Games announced that the Battlefront franchise is getting a new installment. The 3rd Battlefront game has had a stop-start life, with several companies beginning production before they were ultimately cancelled prior to any official announcement of the game's development.

"In 2004, the original Star Wars Battlefront came onto the scene and took gamers – and Star Wars fans – by surprise. It was an ambitious action shooter that gave players the opportunity to step into the shoes of their favorite Star Wars characters, pilot quintessential Star Wars vehicles, and relive classic Star Wars battles.

Fast forward nearly 10 years and gamers still have many of those same Star Wars gaming fantasies – but now they wish to experience those larger-than-life battles in magnificent high definition, with all of the amazing special effects, vehicle physics and gameplay intensity that the next-generation has to offer.

Star Wars Battlefront, developed by DICE on Frostbite 3, will surprise and delight fans yet again with a new experience inside this beloved universe made with our signature DICE craftsmanship and commitment to excellence."

So there we go, new Battlefront is coming. Let's hope for more Star Wars story-driven games too, along the lines of Dark Forces / Jedi Knight or the X-Wing series.

I understand he's talking about other traditional games in the Star Wars franchise.

I wonder what constitutes a 'traditional' Star Wars Game, if a First Person Shooter (Battlefront III) is not considered such ?

Older Star Wars IFranchises, perhaps - such as Dark Forces / Jedi Knight, and the X-Wing and Rogue Squadron series'?

"The opportunity to do a new Battlefront, for example, which is one of the very popular Star Wars games, or some of the other traditional games that were made, is very exciting,"

The thought of EA having a go at the "other traditional games" turns my stomach.
For Star Wars (and maybe even Indy) FPS/MMO type stuff, let EA go for it, but anything related to the SCUMM titles needs to go to a Telltale, Double Fine or AME (Straandlooper, perhaps?!) where you know it'll be treated right. And also won't be slathered in poorly designed DRM.

    There's also this from here.

News broke last week that EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen discussed releasing the game at Stifel Internet, Media & Communications Conference this week in New York:
"The opportunity to do a new Battlefront, for example, which is one of the very popular Star Wars games, or some of the other traditional games that were made, is very exciting," Jorgensen said at the conference."

...but just remember that each time a new Star Wars game is announced, our chances of ever seeing more Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island or Grim Fandango grow smaller.

    And yet, this:

Idk, that just seems like they're making sure nobody else can use the IP, the trademark was renewed before and nothing was done with it. There have been rumours that something would be unveiled at E3, but there's only one day left of that and I see no signs of that happening. I guess I've just become really pessimistic about the potential for the classics to be revived, the death of LucasArts as a development studio has really put a bitter taste in my mouth and I can't really see any hope until I see some action; a good step in the right direction would be for the old titles to end up on GOG (nudge wink Disney)

As fashionable as it is to Chicken Little any news tidbit of this sort, the hard facts are that--in this case--Disney has already accomplished in less than six months what LucasArts couldn't do in half a decade: commit to a legitimate heir to the Battlefront franchise in partnership with a developer who FPS fans can be excited about.

I don't think a Star Wars game has had the benefit of a studio as good as DICE since Factor Five worked small miracles with the greatness that was Rogue Squadron II. Easily.

I wouldn't go that far. It's not the same situation it was when LucasArts was independent.

No one knows Disney's plans, so you can't really compare it to the independent-era LucasArts mindset. Star Wars is set in stone now, but EA only has the exclusive rights to make Star Wars games, So, EA choosing to make a Star Wars title doesn't have any bearing on the other LucasArts franchises.

Disney might have plans to have LucasArts license out their adventure game properties and Indiana Jones, Indiana Jones only, or neither. No one knows how it's going to play out until it happens.

In know this may seem a bit controversial, but in all honestly, as long as all the LucasArts classics like the adventure games are being left out in the cold, I couldn't give 2 shits about Star Wars. It has been way too long since they've been given the respect they deserve, Star Wars doesn't deserve to have any more games come out of it until the other franchises get some attention. That's just my opinion, and I'm happy for those of you who are excited by this news, but just remember that each time a new Star Wars game is announced, our chances of ever seeing more Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island or Grim Fandango grow smaller.
