The Other Lawsuit 09 Aug, 2001, 17:56 / 15 comments

The other lawsuit...
As reported first on ScummBar, it seems that Clint Bajackians company CBStudios which earlier this month posted a MP3 of Clint's work from EMI, was made to take down the MP3 by LucasArts.

Are LEC being to pedantic now about their intelluctual rights and property?

Is this one step to far? Have your say and post your comments for this news item. We know quite a few LEC employees read Mojo, so have your say.

If LucasArts were planing to release a soundtrack CD of EMI, this step somehow would make sense. If not, this is really a shame! In how far could downloading a few MP3s possibly hurt their sales? Most people already own a game before downloading these. And IF someone stumbles over such files by coincidence without owning the game, this great music could even motivate them to actually BUY the game!

LEC are just scared that some 12 year old, working alone in their bedroom will make a better game than they can. If we're judging by the pathetic Phantom Menace game, this could be easily achieved

If this carries on, I thinkg you people should move your servers to Slovenia or Mexico or Cuba or Malasia or someplace that American TM laws don't reach... Mars?

Don't you people see?!?! Ol' man Georgetm is genuinely afraid that some Billy Joe Bob from upper middle Tennessee, suburb of Nashville is going to say X-Wingtm and then everybody would be swayed to believe he invented the word! I'm starting to draw a parallel b/n Our favourite Lucastm and no one's favourite Metallicatm here, anyone else? This has become a witch's hunt where nooses are swung from every accessible tree in anticipation of the culprits to be. And then they ask me why I can't stand American capitalism....
Is Colin Powel going to wake up one day to see three startrooperstm , Bobba Fetttm and Georgetm himself next to his bed, stuttering about the name Star Warstm? I personally wouldn't mind seeing the title in the Enquirer: "'Colin Powel last seen boarding a strange craft in a carbon block' ? claims his gardener in Alexandria, VA", but that's the next step... They're going to have to rename the defunct missile system Starr Wars or something... I actually think MAD Magazine holds that TM...

Considering the systematic quality drop of LEC's products, soon the problem may not exist any more, because there will be no one left interested in the company's "intellecual property". People at LEC should rather concentrate on making games which are fun to play.

I'm pretty sure that LEC's legal dept. have to look up to LucasFilms legal dept. and basically copy everything they do, use the same rules etc. LucasFilm is the big Daddy! I'ts a shame that the mp3 was taken down, i didint get a chance to hear it first either as i was away for ages. Damn!

Pretty soon fan sites are gonna have to look something like this: "Joe's site about his favorite game, the one with the pirates and monkeys. " No pictures Just carefully chosen words.

I'm beginning to loathe LEC.... even more... GRRRR ARGHHHH!

I guess this means I won't be doing Mojo Remix, a thingy similar to Overclocked Remix after all.

Oh, schucks. I was hoping that this would be the first step of releasing rare LucasArts music on the Net officially, but it seems I was wrong. I understand the intellectual property issues involved (they have to actively protect their rights or they might lose them, et cetera, et cetera), but I can't see how game music (which is after all only downloaded by the most ardent fans) would hurt LEC via sales or any other way. In any case, here's still hoping for an EMI soundtrack. Wish LEC will come to their senses.

It's a shame that LEC feels it needs to stop any use of their "property" in any shape or form at the moment. The people who are most affected are the fans imo... Doesn't LEC see what harm this kind of hostility is doing to the community?
  • telarium on 09 Aug, 2001, 21:19…
They probably do, but I imagine that it's somehow out of their control at the moment. Of course they don't want to create hostility, but I imagine that there are other legal issues that we wouldn't really understand. However, what we can hope for is that LEC is able to work out some sort of compromise in the near future so that they can protect their property while delivering a means for the fans to gain more exposure to their product.

If LEC had released or was planning on releasing an EMI soundtrack, then this would have been fine and dandy. Seeing that this most likely won't happen, LEC's actions are rather silly. What's next? Stop sites like The Scumm Bar from letting people download MI screenshots for use as desktop pictures?
  • telarium on 09 Aug, 2001, 20:03…
I hate to complain about LEC's legal actions, but I must agree with Remi here. I'm sure they have their reasons, whatever they may be... but LucasArts music is too much of a treasure not to share. I thought the cutscene music in EMI was great, and it's really sad that we may never get the chance to just have the music by itself without voices and sound effects mixed in. Same goes for CMI or much of Grim... and a lot of those music cues have ambient sound effects mixed into them. I hate to think that we may never hear the wonderful ship deck sword fighting music from the beginning of EMI without all of the other noise mixed into it.
  • mameluke on 10 Aug, 2001, 04:33…
The ship deck music has its own use with AND without the sound effects :) Same goes with the ScummBar Music. I've used both as background music in some stuff.. nothing like a clang of a swordfight and a "arrrg" of some drunk pirates :)
