The Original (Emperor's) Tomb Raider 08 May, 2002, 12:41 / 22 comments

LucasArts has unveiled their second E3 title: Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, co-developed by LucasArts and The Collective. Indy is back, obviously, this time in 1935 China after a relic called "Heart of the Dragon."

The game uses a 3rd person view like its predecessor Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, but this new title is allegedly based more around the action than block-pushing, jumping, and other "puzzles." Here's a bit from the press release:
Indy's latest adventure plays out in dramatic fashion thanks to new gameplay features such as brawling combat. This time, in addition to using his trademark whip and pistol, Indy can engage in fierce hand-to-hand combat against foes, many of whom are well-versed in martial arts. Improvised weapons such as shovels, chairs and table legs also can be used to fend off adversaries. The result is a more immersive and more Indy-like gameplay experience, set amidst spine-tingling movie-like action sequences, such as a rickshaw chase in Hong Kong and a spectacular battle atop moving gondolas in the South China Sea area.
The new Indy game is expected Fall 2002 for XBox, Playstation 2, and ... wait for it... the PC. More game info and some screenshots are available at the Emperor's Tomb site. Talk about it in the E3 Forums.

I don't get it! How does Gamespot get such extensive previews so fast??

Anyway "- greater emphasis on its action elements" doesn't sound all that appealing to me.

    Inside info, I'd guess.

"greater emphasis on its action elements" -- you know, it sounds a lot funnier if you replace "elements" with "elephants" :)

oops.. sorry about the ugliness.. wish I could edit..

I hope the controls are a lot better than in the Infernal Machine.

I am happy to see another Indiana Jones game (although I'd appreciate less action and more puzzles), but to be honest: The screenshots look pretty crappy! Why does RTX look so much better?

See this, or this, both from Infernal Machine. Now the new game looks like this and this, which is noticibly better especially with the player models. Also remember that they still have like half of a year dedicated to finishing up and polishing the game before it comes out. Also, I've seen a video of the game in action and the player animation looks fantastic. While it's not the most cutting edge game visually I say it looks far from "crappy."

You've seen what??? That's not fair...

The graphics aren't kick-ass amazing, but they aren't not crappy by a long shot either.

The screenshots look crappy? I don't agree. Do you remember Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine?

The graphics aren't exactly mind-boggling, but decent. Looks like they'll get the job done just fine. And who really cares about graphics? Gameplay is what really matters. I want a game that will finally make me feel that I am Dr Jones.

Yes, I remember, those graphics were even worse. But this game is 3 years old (is it?). I admit that Indy himself looks nice with his whip, but the environment looks really low-polygon-like. I hope the level design is as good as in the Infernal Machine.

I agree. But they are probably screenshots of a relatively early game... If they are planning for a "fall" release date (not on Gamecube, damn them! SUPPOSE I'll have to get the PC version...) then they will up the resolution for consoles and create higher res textures and back grounds of more than one polygon.

  • LucasTones on 08 May, 2002, 12:53…
Cool - I wish it was on Gamecube though. I look forward non-the-less.

So true! They should sod the dead Xbox and get with the two consoles (and the PC) that are actually selling well! It's quite logical really!

This looks good. Two potentially good games announced, no Star Wars games yet... Looks like Simon boy kept his 50/50 promise.
