(Re-post from yesterday! Submit more questions!)

Roll up Roll up! It's Question time once more. Our inteview with Reeve Thompson was so succesful, we are going to do it again!

This time Aaron Giles takes the stand as our Mojo-Bionic questions are fired randomly towards his ether.

Aaron Giles has been in the news recently for his conversions of Sam & Max and Full Throttle to windows XP for use in the LucasArts Entertainment Pack. He also worked on the old ports of LEC's finest adventure games to the Mac way back in the last millennium.

You can submit any questions you'd like to ask him in the normal way, which just so happens to be by leaving a comment.

If you still have no idea who Aaron Giles is look over here!

I have a bit of a technical question. Suppose LucasArts wanted updated versions of games like Monkey Island 2 and Fate of Atlantis in the future. Off the top of your head, how would you go about implementing the music in those games since they used Adlib and the superior MT-32 samples as opposed to General MIDI?
  • chuzwuzza on 12 Jan, 2003, 23:07…
MT-32 instruments can easily be mapped mostly to GM instruments, and the custom MT-32 samples can also be mapped - just check out Monkey Island 2 played with ScummVM, I've mapped most of the used custom MT-32 instruments to reasonable sounding GM versions.
And the samples which were used for sound effects could easily be replaced with digital sound.

All seems fairly straight forward to me

Along the 'hidden features' line, is there a way to display the games in old, Mode 13 (320x200), if your card/driver/OS supports it?
  • twifkak on 12 Jan, 2003, 09:53…
(Annotation: For me, it's the sound that breaks. Evil, evil sound. Evil, evil, evil sound. Also, I don't have $75 to blow on an MT-32 or compatible, but that's another issue.)

    Whats your favourite LEC adventure?
Do you read Mojo and other fansites often?
In the entertainment pack, theres a 'skip cutscenes' registry key. Was this intentionally left in there? Since it doesnt actually seem to auto-skip cutscenes or anything.
Are there any more 'hidden' registry keys, that you could tell us about?

Q: What's your favorite moment in all this time working for LucasArts?
  • Marek on 12 Jan, 2003, 03:52…
    Erm, wait ... he's freelancer isn't he?
  • Remi O on 12 Jan, 2003, 08:45…
I believe he used to work full-time for LEC.
  • LGH on 12 Jan, 2003, 04:00…
Anyway, he's been working for LucasArts on several occasions, so he may still pick one favorite moment.
  • Kingzjester on 10 Jan, 2003, 17:57…
Are you aware that your name is an anagram for: I O SANG REAL (or I O SAN GREAL)?! What is the meaning of THAT, sir?! To whom do you OWE the Holy Grail!? I want answers and I want them now!
  • QueZTone on 10 Jan, 2003, 18:01…
    gabriel knight 3

  • Kingzjester on 10 Jan, 2003, 18:45…
not in particular, but there too did it appear
  • QueZTone on 11 Jan, 2003, 03:24…
i loved that kind of mysteries/discoveries

    GK owns!
  • Lucasmad on 10 Jan, 2003, 15:30…
    Q) How did you end up working for Lucasarts on this project?
  • LGH on 10 Jan, 2003, 13:29…
    - Who has come up with the idea of the Entertainment Pack?
    - What's the reason for developing something that is afterwards only sold in the UK? (so far, at least)
    - Wouldn't it have been possible to realease these Windows versions as free, downloadable patches, so that people who already owned the originals don't have to buy the games again?
    - Does he know ScummVM? What does he think about that project?
  • BooJaka on 10 Jan, 2003, 12:09…
I want them to release old games so they work on new systems but have the original boxes and stuff given away like newspapers and books of spells and so forth.

Can anyone phrase that into a question for me?
  • spaff on 10 Jan, 2003, 12:09…
    "can you work miracles?"
  • QueZTone on 10 Jan, 2003, 12:32…
lol, thats a great question, ask him if he can work miracles :)
  • Remi O on 10 Jan, 2003, 12:01…
The obvious question is if he'll be converting some of the older games, like DOTT, MI 1 & 2, etc. I wouldn't mind seeing CMI with filtered graphics either.
  • laceyware on 10 Jan, 2003, 13:59…
DOTT was converted for an earlier LucasArts release in the UK, wasn't it? I saw DOTT and Sam & Max in one box released only last year...
  • Remi O on 10 Jan, 2003, 14:06…
As far as I know that was the old, plain-vanilla version re-bundled.
  • Gabez on 12 Jan, 2003, 05:39…
Yeah, it was just the same. On the same CD as Sam & Max though.
  • Jake on 10 Jan, 2003, 11:57…
Heh. This is a tougher interview than the RTX one, because he includes so many answers already on his site! Trying to put us out of a job I think.
