Star Wars Racer II 10 May, 2001, 02:12 / 33 comments

Today's mystery E3 title was just announced. What is it? Star Wars Racer Revenge: Racer II, a PlayStation 2-bound sequel to last years Episode 1: Racer. Developed by Rainbow Studios, makers of "Motocross Madness" and "ATV Off-Road Fury," SWRR:R2 is set 8 years after the original Racer game (and therefore 8 years after Episode 1 the film), with a basic running story going something like this:
It has been eight years since the first spectacular Podracing showdown between Sebulba and the young Anakin Skywalker. Seeking payback for his humiliating loss, Sebulba has a new beefed-up Podracer and lust for revenge. But it's not going to be easy: Anakin has grown into a boldly skilled Podracer pilot.
As usual with the new console titles the artwork is pretty nice looking, a step up from the original Racer game for sure. As for gameplay, we'll just have to see.

Yep it means there wont be any others this year.

So let me see if I get this straight. Luccid Arts have two more titles to announce. Now if neither of these are adventure games, that means they will not be releasing any adventure games at all this year. Am I thinking right?
  • penbrook on 11 May, 2001, 02:18…
How about our game pages(well i dont have one) take a one year break until next years E3...then well see if we have any major (real) news to report Scummbuddy

Whos up for some Escape from Star Wars Island: Droid Combat next? OOK EEP CHEE! or some such rubbish

I must admit to being a fan of the Star Wars franchise but now this is just out of hand. There's only so many times you can milk a cash cow. EMI didn't fare too badly in the sales department and I believe another adventure would most likely do better than this crap...who the hell bought Star Wars Racer 1? Come on LEC...one quality adventure a year isn't asking too much.
  • scabb on 10 May, 2001, 20:59…
    Die SW DDDDIIIIIIIIIEEEEEIEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  • scabb on 10 May, 2001, 21:04…

I shortened your dieee so it wouldn't break the html, hope you don't mind :)
  • Metallus on 11 May, 2001, 21:34…
Don't pull a "Metallus" now, scabb. ARGH!
  • GregD on 10 May, 2001, 20:51…
Oh woopeee another stupid star wars game.. of course LEC is milking this concept as much as possible... all for money. There must be 20 odd star wars games now... it just proves they have no brains when it comes to producing original games any more. The days of MI, DOTT, SamnMax, full throttle and The Dig are gone unfortunately.

There went the "promising" piece of Concept art. Well, let's not complain, it is a new game, at least... The last two won't be.

Theres two announcements left... Any hope of a original or adventure game is pretty much down the pan... Two places left... Star Wars Galaxies & Rogue Squadron 2 are only ones not announced yet... - ROLE ON E3 2002!!! Long live LEC... *sigh*
  • Jake on 10 May, 2001, 08:57…
Galaxies was fully announced long ago (far far away? heh sorry). I'm expecting Rogue Squadron for Gamecube and Jedi Power Battles for Gameboy Advance, both previewed earlier this week on IGN.

right, its time we use the (mixnmojo voodoo) doll on someone named jeffrey!
  • QueZTone on 10 May, 2001, 11:19…
    or jeffery for that matter.....[typo]
  • Jake on 10 May, 2001, 20:57…
It's ok you are forgiven. The LEC webmaster made the same typo for a really big graphic when they linked to the Mojo interview. They corrected it pretty quickly though. :P
  • invisibelle on 10 May, 2001, 04:32…
Hey, I have one thing to say, and that's that I couldn't give a [expletive] less about Star Wars. *spit on Lucasarts*
  • invisibelle on 10 May, 2001, 04:42…
You know, come to think of it, I do have a couple of other things to say. 1) Who buys this crap? Because that's what it is -- crap. The last few times I went into the video game stores, I was really sad about how shoddy LucasArts games look (and ARE!) next to the all of the other games that I was excitedly pointing out to my friend. The packaging is embarrassingly bad, too. Last time I went in I was wearing a LucasArts t-shirt and was ashamed. 2) I've (or my parents have, when I was a little 'un) been buying LEC games since I was eight years old (I'm 19 now). I'd love to keep doing it, but they've failed to produce more than 3 games in the past few years that I wanted to buy. I understand that the die hard LEC adventure fans aren't as important as we'd like to be to the company, but that only makes me more bitter about seeing the company that has always made my favorite games going slowly down the toilet, drowing in a circumrotating current of Star Wars feces, and being powerless to do a damn thing about it. *sigh* that's all.
  • Swordmaster on 10 May, 2001, 09:49…
The sad thing is, millions of people *do* buy that crap. A soddy plagiarized unoriginal SW title will bring in more revenue than a high-quality adventure game any day. I agree with your sentiments about the game packagings!
  • Jake on 12 May, 2001, 18:56…
Did SW Demolition or Jedi Power Battles for PSX or DC really sell super well? I personally know 5 or 6 people who purchased EMI (guess people in Petaluma are just smart ;) and zero people who own a SW title announced in the last 2 years... Oh I know one who bought Force Commander but he was annoyed with it.
  • Remi O on 13 May, 2001, 18:01…
Force Commander was fairly high in the chart. I belive it stayed in the top 5 for quite a while. Which is really terribly sad, come to think of it.
  • Metallus on 10 May, 2001, 04:53…
Preach on, Sarah! I hope George Lucas is spinning in his grave...
  • QueZTone on 10 May, 2001, 08:09…
he is still alive you know :) i think lec will realise soon enough that they are slacking off, if they make an announcement in of the two last of at least one adventure game ill be satisfied. And thats lec's trick really. "just give 'em one adventure game so they shut up already again". and i'm afraid itll work for me. Till i finished the game that is, then ill be screaming for more!
  • Mad Lord Snapcase on 10 May, 2001, 15:23…
He is? Damn. Does that mean he will continue production those damn Star Wars prequels? :-)
  • Remi O on 10 May, 2001, 17:20…
Get ready for Star Wars: Jar Jar's Revenge.
  • Sloth on 10 May, 2001, 04:13…
Does LucasArts even make their own games anymore? Galactic Battlegrounds is by Ensemble, Racer 2 is by Rainbow Studios, Star Wats Galaxies is by Sony Online, Unnamed Star Wars role-playing game is by BioWare... Basically all they're doing on their own right now are converting old games (EMI, Starfighter) to new consoles. Actually now that I think about it, maybe this is a good thing, after all it frees up more employees for a new adventure game.
  • Sloth on 10 May, 2001, 04:15…
Oh yeah, I forgot Rogue Squadron 2 by Factor 5
  • penbrook on 10 May, 2001, 03:53…
well so much for the 50-50 starwars - adventure. i dunno, if the next 2 are adventures, then its 3 to 5...somewhat good. oh well we can only hope.
  • Remi O on 10 May, 2001, 15:10…
50/50 Star Wars and original titles, not adventures. As I've mentioned before, there will be some time until you see this happening.
  • Remi O on 10 May, 2001, 02:47…
Ohboyohboyohboy! I can hardly wait! More Star Wars!
  • penbrook on 10 May, 2001, 02:38…
Are you kidding? It will fail to your Super Max Brothers.
  • Metallus on 11 May, 2001, 21:36…
Now there's a game I've been waiting for forever.
  • mercatfat on 10 May, 2001, 02:15…
This will surely be the greatest game ever made.
