Star Wars: Episode I Racer Is Now On GOG.com 01 May, 2018 / 8 comments

The best non-Lego, non-arcade, non-pinball game based on Star Wars: Episode I is now available digitally.*

Star Wars: Episode I Racer is now available from GOG.com.

*It's probably not coincidental that podracing is also the best part of the Star Wars: Episode I film.

Not the best part, but one of the best for sure.

Clearly the best part was the part where this alien llama farts in Jar Jar's face.

I didn't like the prequels, but those have been criticized to hell and back over the years so anything I have to say about them would be repetition, and I think George Lucas is actually a really nice and interesting guy whose only real crime is that he made some bad movies. He definitely doesn't deserve any more hate over those.

Anyway, I do really like the new movies. I know it's this giant money-making Hollywood machine (it honestly always was) that's overly dependent on nostalgia (like most blockbusters these days), and I used to be way more cynical about that stuff, but hey, I can't help really enjoying my time with them. They actually do enough interesting things with the story, I love all the new characters, and especially the set design and alien puppets are absolutely breathtaking. Every new movie has brought some frankly stunning scenes with them as well. That's enough for me to really enjoy these kinds of movies. Even with these enormous companies behind it, there's still a lot of love, character and creativity portrayed within them. The personalities of the people creating it really shine through. That's really rare for movies on that scale these days. These kinds of movies are always easy to hate on, but I'm just having more fun getting into them and enjoying them for what they are trying to do. There's a lot to love.

It probably helps that I only ever liked 2,5 of the George Lucas movies and never really cared about any of the extra EU stuff.

Yeah I agree, Episode I was fluff and obviously couldn't adequately follow a cultural behemoth like star wars but Lucas was still having fun...they just got progressively worse and worse from there, until finally you end up the super-hero-SJW-dross of the current movies.

Didn't even bother to see the newest one.

I remember the arcade version was exciting when it was released, the graphics were pretty realistic for the time.

...I think Phantom Menace was much more original and interesting than those movies, which are just trying to hollowly ape the classic trilogy.

The aping started quite deliberately with the prequel trilogy. Check this out.

I don't know... I reckon there are people that take it waaaaay too seriously.
I have to say that I've enjoyed all of the Star Wars films so far, including Rogue One. Yes, some are better than others, but I haven't hated any of them.
I'm looking forward to next December to see how this new trilogy wraps up.

Non-arcade? The first place I played this game was in an arcade in that super cool arcade cabinet you sat in and moved the levers on both sides like you were actually in a pod racer.

That'd be Star Wars: Episode I - Racer Arcade which is sort of a stripped-down version of the PS2/Gamecube game with better graphics.

Same premise, some of the same elements, but the GOG version is a lot more "simmy" and has quite a few more racers and tracks.

I thought it was the best of the prequels. Of the 3, it had the least forced acting (Qui-Gonn was good), the least CGI, and I think because Lucas hadn't received as much criticism yet he was having the most fun with it. If I compare all of the iconic vehicles or even worlds (the Gungan city for example) made for that movie to the new Disney movies, I think Phantom Menace was much more original and interesting than those movies, which are just trying to hollowly ape the classic trilogy.

Yeh, the lightsaber fight at the end was pretty awesome, especially with Duel of the Fates as the soundtrack for it!
