I will admit to having... mixed... feelings about Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island (more commonly known as SeMI), and after a while, my mind started wandering. What would my knee-jerk reaction have been twenty-three years ago after seeing the trailer? Anger? Probably! But would that have been fair? Probably not.
Therefore, I sat down and put some therapeutical thoughts down on paper in an article succinctly named 23 Years Ago I Would Have Written an Article Called “Not MY Monkey Island”. Read, if you so must, about my complex relationship with an unreleased expansion pack to a game I’ve never played.
I agree.
You know, I cant find the recipe to go to monkey island from a very long time. Even the last (oh geeeee) "return" wasnt, I must confess it, with many doubts and some shame.
Maybe its me, I now play like a dairy farmer.
Except the “pants falling down” bit in MI2 is easily the worst joke in the entire series. It’s fucking weak in every respect. It made me sad when I was 11, and it makes me feel the same now.
And THAT’S the joke they chose to repeat in the trailer?
The writing is awful. Murray sounds his corniest. Guybrush looks like he was made an AI instructed to make a Guybrush Threepwood that bears no resemblance whatsoever to Guybrush Threepwood. The same goes for the Voodoo Lady.
But does any of that matter? Not really. It’s a silly mod that allows me to walk around Melee in 3D.

I think at the moment I'm more excited by the attention Monkey island is getting in the mainstream and what that could mean for the series' future should this be successful. I know some people are already crying foul about them selling out and becoming too corporate, but to me the series will always be special no matter how much the dead cow gets milked. All I really want is to avoid Melee island in the future, for the love of all that is good and holy.
As far as I'm concerned, Monkey Island shouldn't have a future. It had a remarkable if tumultuous past and present, and has recently gone out on (IMO) a high note. Immortal games don't need constant reincarnation.
I took to the Sea of Thieves news with initial befuddlement ("Is this a community mod or something?") followed by disinterest. It has exactly as much hold on my mind as Amazon does in pretending to expand on The Lord of the Rings: infinitesimal. If it brings the adventure games to more people's attention, cool, otherwise I don't care if it's excellent or execrable to play since I'm not bothering with it.
