SCUMM public release 26 Mar, 2001 / Comments: 18

News reaches me that a petition has been set up to release LEC's Adventure creation engine: SCUMM to the public.
Lucas Arts has made classic adventure games using SCUMM. We are asking Lucas Arts to give SCUMM to people for free or even sell it to the public.
You can sign the petition here

Then again, this could be a good thing and something they would do... if Lucas Arts had increase in workpower per unit of time simmilar to IBM, for example. Releasing the engine would result in prospective programmers already knowing the language and it would reduce the training time and whatnot... Then again they have only around 15 adventures in 15 years; 3 in the last 5 years... Though they HAVE nocked down the SCUMM bar, so they don't really need it, right? Talk amongst yourselves...

SCUMM isn't used anymore. Lucas Arts last 2 adventures were scripted in LUA, which is freely avalible. Training people to use scumm would be pretty pointless, as Lucas Arts no longer use it, but seeing some CMI type games in 800x600 and 16bit colour, made by Lucas Arts nuts would be cool.

    Don't have such a negative opinion Bone_man :)

    Yeah, wishful thinking.

I signed it, but it's never gonna happen. :-(

I as well do not hold much hope in such an occurance. But it can't hurt to try.

I signed it but there was absolutley no point. They don't care about us as much as we would like to beleive. It would be a waste of money on their part.

True as much as the point as to whether or not they could care enough about us, but i dont think it would be a loss on their part. I think sales would boom. Letting us experiecnce the programming and think of how much people would get back into adventure games.

It would be really nice. I signed it.

    THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Who thinks that those avid capitalists will release the engine (if they even do) for less than quadruple the price of 3D MAX?

I sure hope they'll pleasently surprise me.
