Psssst! Wanna know about LucasArts' secret FTP depositary? 01 Jun, 2006 / Comments: 20

Maybe it's old news. I'm sure some of you out there are already aware of this secret little FTP site loitering out the back of the LucasArts servers. So this news item is for the rest of us!

And what's in this FTP site you may ask? Ohh, only (by the looks of the filenames, I haven't personally downloaded and tested them yet);

Slideshows (these appear to simply be in-game images for press) of Rebel Assault, Full Throttle, The Dig, and Dark Forces.

Demos of Escape from Monkey Island, Afterlife, TIE Fighter, Loom, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones' Desktop Adventures, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, X-Wing, Yoda Stories, Outlaws, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, Shadows of the Empire, Mysteries of the Sith, and Curse of Monkey Island.

But wait. There's more...

For you neglected Mac owners;

Demos of Afterlife, Dark Forces, Racer, Sam & Max and X-Wing.

Of course you may need scummVM and / or DOSbox or VDMsound (if you don't know of them, try google) to get some of the older demos to behave on newer computers, but there's something there for everyone over this weekend, surely?

What? You want to rape and pillage the LucasArts' FTP server even further? Well, OK then, just this once. Here are some in-game movies you can download. Now, be off with you! Yarrr!

    The text in DoubleFine's image containg "secrets" says "Hundreds of secrets about Double Fine's new game!" repeated ad infinitum. In case you don't know.

    Also, the book is "The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities" and the title for the image says something about the stack of bills on the desk. I think the kitten is sitting next to a computer mouse too.

    A couple ways. Using photoshop to change the white and dark levels helps some, and so can using some filters like sharpen or changing the resolution, but it doesn't help much.

    More importantly, there are 3 capital letters which are rather distinguishable, and after careful examination one can find that these 3 capital letters repeat themselves in the same patter throughout the entire text.

    After distinguishing that, you then have many different places to read the same thing, so that if it is unclear in one place it may be more clear in another.

    You can also print the image off, and then try to write in the words. If you use the clues on the screen combined with the print off, you get a better understanding of what it could say and how many words there are and what length they are.

    The rest is just guess work.

    In the patches directory (ftp.lucasarts.com/patches/) are updates for games ranging up to Republic Commando and what looks like Empire At War patches, so I reckon this isn't a long forgotten vault.

    Yep, this ftp exists for years now. I remember having downloaded some Mac demos. I've checked it recently, and it seems it's not used for a long time now... maybe you're right, maybe LucasArts guys have forgot it... :)

    Oh, I can just see Jim Ward doing his daily trawl of Mix N Mojo and seeing this item, slamming his fist on the desk, knocking over his Jar-Jar pencil holder and demanding all the non-Star Wars items be removed immediately.

    And maybe put back online in 2015.

    I can't vouch that any of these demos actually work (some of the file sizes seem incredibly small, around 1MB or less), but certainly worth a poke around!

    Well, the full version, non talkie versions of FOA and DOTT were under 10MB, so a demo consisting of only a couple scenes would be pretty small.

    Ah the days of the 3.5 floppy.
