Pirates 'ave got troubles, needs more rum 05 May, 2010 / 7 comments

It seems Disney is starting to lose faith in those meddling Pirates of the Caribbean, with a number of troubles hitting the fourth installment On Stranger Tides like a Kraken against a ship with Orlando Bloom in it.

A number of major details have been given the axe apparently, most notably Pirates 1-3 director Gore Verbinski, a third of the budget and the, um, Caribbean. The titular Caribbean will be replicated using Hawaii and that other famous tropical island paradise, England.

Now we know why the rum's always gone.

Couldn't agree more with Udvarnoky. This is thoroughly sensational headline and newspost. The movie hasn't run into any sort of problems, and the recent news of scaling back the budget from previous films is not a bad thing in any way, it can only make for more tightly scripted and thought out film.

I have high hopes for this one on account of the source material and things are looking pretty great so far, especially casting.
Haven't heard of Geoffrey Rush, and as much as I like him I wouldn't really want to squeeze him into this story just for the sake of it.

    Melancholick

As for the budget slashing, all I can say is: GOOD. Comparing the Errol Flynn-style antics and swordplay from the first film to the incredibly over-conceived, visually bloated action sequences from the second and third is all I needs to see in order to endorse a "less is more" approach.

    Excellent point.

This news is all almost as old as the production's initial announcement, including Verbinski's departure, the lower budget (is there anywhere to go but down after At World' End?), and the Hawaii/England shoot.

I don't see how approaching this installment with a lower budget is indicative of Disney "starting to lose faith" in the franchise so much as Disney "not being retarded."

I'm pretty sure Disney had made it quite clear for several years now that they will no longer be filming ANY films in the Caribbean as per the numerous amounts of theft on set by locals hired as set helpers.

Tee, I'm pretty sure that Rush was confirmed as far back as last summer... so we're all good on the "greatest ghost/zombie pirate not named LeChuck" front. :D

This one's still got more cash behind it than Curse of the Black Pearl did, and it didn't hurt that movie from being one of the great surprises of the last decade's cinematic offerings.

Gore is long gone. Didn't know about the budget cut, but that could actually help the film. As for the lack of the Caribbean... Have you seen Lost? Looks like it would be a nice setting.

Yes, they're trying to make a smaller film this time. At World's End[\i] was a ridiculously big film, it must have cost a fortune to make - so now they're focusing on character, apparently.

I hope Geoffrey Rush is in it :)
