New Star Wars movies rumoured; LucasArts Renaissance in familiar jeopardy 25 Oct, 2010 / 7 comments

It's been reported today that George Lucas is working on some new Star Wars movies. The trilogy would be put into production after the re-release of the existing six movies in 3D, or 'Fadvision™'.

This would, presumably, have the same effect that the prequel trilogy did upon LucasArts - which is to say, they would make a whole bunch of Star Wars games. So if this Renaissance really gets going, don't hold your breath...

Of course, I might just be being needlessly negative. And it's just a rumour. George Lucas has done this kind of thing before, after all.

If someone else took control of these sequels I could imagine them being awesome. Star Wars is great if handled by competent creative people.

I'm guessing maybe some of the writers from the upcoming TV series could get involved - this is obviously very early in pre-production, if the rumour's even true, so there are almost certainly no scripts yet.

The problem hayden is that George Lucas has become an insane control freak, and so powerful that no one is willing to stand up to him and go "George, you're a lovely person, but you can't write or direct for shit." The sad thing is he KNOWS he can't write dialogue OR direct people. He's stated it on interviews before.

he won't be restricted by having to make a film fit perfectly into an already existing timeline.

No, I'm actually viewing this as a very positive thing, and I think that the movies have a very good chance of being better than the prequels. Because, if Lucas is planning on setting the films in a time period after the original trilogy, then he'll have a greater amount of freedom - he won't be restricted by having to make a film fit perfectly into an already existing timeline. He has a fresh start, and he can just focus on making good films, which I am confident he is able to do given the right circumstances. And these ARE the right circumstances.

You make Frank Capra films seem cynical.
