Monkey Island-style Sea of Thieves 30 Jun, 2021 / 8 comments

You may or may not have heard that Sea of Thieves has doubled down on some Monkey Island content. (I assume with a new content update. But maybe not. I know nothing of the game.) Well, you do not have to play the game to see what it all looks like, thanks to this intrepid Redditor:

(Video was originally embedded here, but because Reddit is quite possibly literally hell, it insisted on autoplaying. So it’s now below the cut.)

I mean, that’s… something.

Update! Junaid points out that the map seen in the video is a tribute to Paco Vink's map from World of Monkey Island (RIP).

Another thing we discovered today regarding one of the maps in there: https://twitter.com/imajunation/status/1410963595635089416?s=21

I thought it looked familiar! Updated accordingly.

I watched a Kinda Funny interview with two Rare devs about Sea of Thieves / the new Pirates content, and Monkey Island / Ron Gilbert got referred to many times - obviously some fans there so maybe there's more to come..

Has anyone stripped out the music for us all yet?? :)

It’s a nice rendition in my opinion.

Great nod, but while a future expansion would be nice, nothing beats another genuine point and click adventure. That's what I really want to see.

Also, where's Murray?! I want to pick him up and walk around with him while he either yells at me or also encourages me to be eeeeevil.

Oh, this makes sense. They recently did a big Pirates of the Caribbean licensed update. So working with Disney on that would have given them both the thematic and practical chance to add something like this. Fun!
