Monkey Island makes magazine cover, LEC makes MI2 Special Edition? 15 Nov, 2009, 03:16 / 14 comments

As observed in this Telltale forum thread, Monkey Island graces the cover of Issue 70 of UK magazine Retro Gamer. Included is an eight page retrospective of the series complete with new interviews with Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman, and Steve Purcell. Awesome.

But that's not the end of the news. The same thread contains the following post of boundless intrigue by our own Laserschwert, whom Retro Gamer contacted for the use of his cleaned-up version of the MI2 cover:
Interesting side note: The Retro Gamer guys told me that when they went to get the okay from LucasArts to use the MI2-artwork, LucasArts was actually concerned about that, because - as the put it - "they haven't released Monkey Island 2 yet". Sounds like it's going to get a definite re-relase... question is: will it be an SE?
Hopefully (depending on your school of thought on this), that's the slip-up on LEC's part that it sounds like, and we can expect a special edition of LeChuck's Revenge on the horizon.

Not that we've been particularly diligent with keeping tabs on all the great TMI coverage, but you might also want to check out this informative interview with Mike Stemmle.

To make my school of thought clear, and in no disrespect to fans of the SE: "Dear God, No. Please, No."

    I think I love you.

You can just switch back to classic mode. If it turns-out to be an option, switch to the new mode and then just mute the acting.

So what am I so afraid of?

I'm afraid that I'm not sure of a love there is no cure for.

I thought what to be afraid of was obvious.

It's a shame that you've included all of my typos in that quote...

I'm shocked that you would think Mojo would in any way alter someone's quotes!
  • Laserschwert on 15 Nov, 2009, 04:46…
Actually I am seeing my typos right here for the first time, so the shock was on my part already.

LA had better not mess up the voice acting like the first one. I couldn't bear to see Captain Dread modernized. They'd have to get the best Bob Marley impersonator on the planet.

Or the art style. Or the atmosphere. Or you know, make an SE.

Well, what worked for MI One probably won't work for MI2. How would they do the "Beer On The Wall" bit, or "Nice "? These are things we have to consider.

I don't understand why anyone would be threatened by an SE. Since when is its intention to replace the original game? I wouldn't play The Secret of Monkey Island: SE over the floppy version any day, but I still like having it as another version of the game, with the side benefits of exposing people to Monkey Island and getting to hear familiar voice actors take a whack at 20 year old dialg. MI2 now remains the only game without Dom's voice.

It's okay to not play things you don't like, you know.

I thought so, too, and figured I'd be capable of not buying the Secret SE.

Then, there it was on launch day, MOCKING ME. I'm too capable a consumer NOT to buy this kind of thing.
