Monkey Island Special Edition... on 360?! 20 May, 2009, 13:11 / 68 comments

According to the German ratings board USK, a Special Edition version of The Secret of Monkey Island may be on its way to (of all things) Xbox 360. Presumably this will be downloadable via Xbox Live rather than boxed.

While obviously this must be counted as rumour (not least of which because it raises many questions), let's not forget that just last year USK were the ones that first alerted the adventure gaming community to the existence of Broken Sword on DS and Wii.

Whatever happens, let's hope it's true and that it's coming out on PC and Wii too. Until then, let your imaginations run riot over the tantalising phrase "Special Edition"...

(Additional thanks to Diduz for spotting this first!)

Actually, there has been a new development that has placed this in the more plausible category. Someone appeared on #scummvm last night (14:08 and on) and claimed that he was going to put ScummVM + Day of the Tentacle on the iPhone (for sale on the AppStore). While that is already interesting enough, he then went and said "the rights are currently owned by Activision now"

Yikes! And what was the publisher listed for Monkey Island 360? Activision Blizzard!
  • Udvarnoky on 25 May, 2009, 23:14…
Activision is the international publisher for LEC games - they're the ones responsible for the more recent re-releases in Europe and Australia. It's not bizarre that Activision would be associated with the rights to LEC's back catalog.

In Germany no less, where the leak first broke.

Sorry, thought this used forum based codes.
  • Bad Asp! on 21 May, 2009, 14:25…
If I find out during E3 that this is just a hoax, I'm going to write a letter to the Los Angeles Superior Court asking them to issue a restraining order on Lucasarts forcing them to hand over the programming code for, the development tools used to make, and the rights to characters created for the following series of games:

    Monkey Island
Sam and Max (both Hit the Road AND Freelance Police)
Maniac Mansion (that includes Day of the Tentacle)
    Full Throttle
    The Dig
    Loom
    Zack McKracken
    Grim Fandango

    There, I said it.
  • Rum Rogers on 22 May, 2009, 21:18…
Bad Asp!, I've been reading your crazy comments and ideas both here and on lots of different forums. You're really an ill-minded person, call some doctors PLEASE. Anyway, you know what I think? I wanted FP so much once, but now I wouldn't want it anymore 'cause it's really old and outdated (and dead).
Now let's leave alone the fact that you're just some kind of visionary psycho freak, and let's pretend that your Superior Court would listen to you.
Do you really think that it would be fair to take away copyrighted stuff just because you want it? Private property DOES EXIST, would you like me to occupy your house just because I want it, leaving you homeless? C'mon, go to the nearest sanatorium.
  • Bad Asp! on 22 May, 2009, 22:27…
You people always say FP is old and outdated, yet you play games that are older than that like Tetris and Super Mario Bros.

So you're really not in any position to be calling me ill-minded.
  • Rum Rogers on 23 May, 2009, 10:31…
You're talking about games that were THE TOP when they've been released. FP's never been released, and if it was nowadays, it would be already outdated. You can't release a game which would be a shit at its releasing day.
  • Bad Asp! on 23 May, 2009, 17:11…
What the hell did you just call FP?!
  • Rum Rogers on 23 May, 2009, 17:34…
You mean "shit"? Yeah, after all these years, the game would be a crappy shit. If this makes you feel better, if it was released 2 or 3 years ago, it would have been awesome. But NOW, it's shit. So stop being obsessed, dude.
  • Bad Asp! on 25 May, 2009, 10:44…
If you're going to call it THAT, I won't.
  • Rum Rogers on 25 May, 2009, 11:21…
As always, you avoid to answer the questions that people ask you. The answer to "would it be fair to sue LucasArts?" is "NO WAY". So stop menacing doing that, for 3 reasons:
    1) You don't even know what a restraining order is and everyone will laugh (and is laughing) at you
    2) LA didn't break the law
    3) I always defend things I love, I love(d) LucasArts and they don't deserve a fool speaking of legal issues against'em, 'cause they're a private company and they can do WHATEVER they want with their franchises. So, even if your ridicolous conspiracy story would be true, they CAN do that. Stop it or, quoting Max, "I'll rip your limbs off".
  • Bad Asp! on 25 May, 2009, 12:15…
    1) You never asked me that question,
    2) I know what a restraining order is,
    3) How do you know Lucasarts didn't break the law when they haven't even been investigated yet?
    4) So since you love Lucasarts, that makes you a Lucasarts fanboi, right? (That's right, I spelled it with an "i"!)
  • Rum Rogers on 25 May, 2009, 13:32…
MOST IMPORTANT THING: you're innocent until differently proven, not viceversa!!! You can't investigate someone/something just because you want to! THAT WOULD BE A POLICE STATE, are you a nazi scum or what?!?
    Regarding the other points:
    1) Gee, man, I asked you that question on my first reply to you!
    2) Whatever...
    4) When I was playing Indy3 you weren't probably born... Call me fanboi, fanboy or spell it as you want, but I love LA and I think it deserves respect. Seems to me like you're the FP "fanboi"... Why don't you marry Sam & Max? Or you'd rather be marrying Farmer and Jameson?
  • Bad Asp! on 25 May, 2009, 17:44…
Well, I have no choice but to be an FP fanboi if you people keep going around bashing that game, and the voice actors in that game, for no reason. And why do you think LA deserves respect anyway?

  • Rum Rogers on 25 May, 2009, 23:33…
Look, I'm not bashing that game. I wanted I so much you can't even figure it out! And I also liked Farmer and Jameson more than the actual voice actors (but I like the new ones too). I just think you should stop it, FP will NEVER be released. And I'd like you to understand that this choice is painful but perfectly legal. Things don't always go as we wish, and sometimes we just have to accept it. You can't make the dead live again, you know what I mean. Furthermore, apart from the fact that your intentions to sue a company aren't dangerous at all, you should also understand that you don't have the right to even think about that. LA is honest. LA is bastard, but honest. Stop it, please.
  • Bad Asp! on 26 May, 2009, 16:13…
You obviously haven't read this article, where they clearly LIED about the DS' cart size:
    http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=143948
  • Rum Rogers on 26 May, 2009, 17:02…
Aww, I give up. It's true, they lied, but lying is legal. They probably want to keep their internal policies private, I don't see anything illegal or bad about it! So they lied not to explain real reasons. I really give up. Just know that FP will never be released, you're just hurting yourself (and annoying others).
  • Bad Asp! on 27 May, 2009, 13:08…
Oh, God, I want FP released now more than ever... I think I deserve it after what I went through...
  • Udvarnoky on 22 May, 2009, 01:20…
You might want to look up what a restraining order is.

    You fools!
It´s in German but the news is clear! No MI 1 for consoles-crap:
    http://www.inside-360.pytalhost.com/?p=13078
  • Diduz on 21 May, 2009, 12:21…
    It's not so clear, unfortunately.
    Could you translate that?
I tried to read it via Google Translator and I've noticed that someone in the comment section still stands for the original news.
  • Sven_Q45 on 21 May, 2009, 15:13…
It was a mistake. Somebody write an E-Mail to USK and asked.
They deleted it from the list.
  • Haggis on 21 May, 2009, 12:57…
Basically, it says that they contacted the ratings board, and they wrote back to say it was all a big mistake. They also contacted the guy who translated MI into German, and he also didn't know anything about an MI special edition.

My take on this: Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's all not true. Of course the USK wouldn't come out and say "yes, it's true, we put something on the site that we shouldn't have", and the translator not knowing about it doesn't really mean anything either, I'd think. We'll probably find out at E3 whether it's true, or just a big hoax after all.
  • Diduz on 21 May, 2009, 13:18…
How can they post a "Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition for Xbox 360" entry BY MISTAKE? It's a pretty creative mistake. I have some difficulty in buying this.
  • Haggis on 21 May, 2009, 16:16…
Yeah, the only way it could be a mistake is if some nitwit working for USK posted it as a joke, but that doesn't seem too likely to me...
  • Udvarnoky on 22 May, 2009, 01:21…
The AG guys wouldn't have posted their write-up if it was misinformation.

If this all pans out, and the other MI games are in for the same treatment, should be a great free marketing ploy for Tiller's Ghost Pirates to get some leverage off.
  • Diduz on 20 May, 2009, 22:44…
I am not sure this will help Bill's game. Not if the DTP marketing wanted to sell Ghost Pirates with a "Do you miss Monkey Island?"
  • jp-30 on 20 May, 2009, 22:50…
There's a generation of gamers who have never heard of or played a Monkey island game.

Introducing these people to the 'Carribean piratey voodoo world' can only mean a bigger target audience for Tiller to tap into.
  • Udvarnoky on 20 May, 2009, 23:02…
    Agreed.
  • Diduz on 20 May, 2009, 20:30…
According to Adventuregamers, it's Live Arcade.
  • The Tingler on 20 May, 2009, 20:56…
They also claim to have confirmed it from a source, although a source where? LucasArts?
  • Diduz on 20 May, 2009, 21:11…

    Lucasarts on Steam please.

LeChuck's root beer explosion now has the addition of a hokey atmospheric debris ring around it.
  • Melancholick on 21 May, 2009, 23:27…
And we can expect the game's postscript to have an atmospheric, New-Wavey orchestral version of "A Pirate I Was Meant to Be" playing over cinematics of folks celebrating LeChuck's demise on Blood, Scabb, Phatt and Booty islands.
  • Capn_Nacho on 20 May, 2009, 19:47…

There's a whole different song playing in the Scumm Bar, and a pair of dancers have been added in.
  • The Tingler on 21 May, 2009, 08:23…

  • Shmargin on 20 May, 2009, 18:18…
If Lucasarts has anything to do with it, then the "Special Edition" probably means they added some running and shooting elements along with a Battle of Hoth level.

  • GodzillaX8 on 20 May, 2009, 16:55…
Since I am feeling optimistic right now, I will say that it will have hd graphics and full voiceovers. But judging by the usage of the term in the DVD world, special edition means it will have a crappy 5 minute long documentary and nothing else extra.
  • Haggis on 20 May, 2009, 16:29…
Maybe they've put the Spiffy the dog close-up back in. That'd be pretty special.
  • icanseestars on 20 May, 2009, 14:35…
A full remake is rather unlikely I think.

What it could be is a few nuggets thrown the way for conventional gamers when that new zcam is revealed for the Xbox by MS at E3.

The zcam which tracks movement better than the Wii mote could in theory work as a mouse pointer thus enabling playing these classic adventures games on XBLA.

  • neon_git on 20 May, 2009, 14:14…
I don;t want to get too excited, even if this is true we all know what Special Edition means over at Skywalker Ranch.
  • The Tingler on 20 May, 2009, 15:32…
I always thought Monkey Island 1 would be improved by making LeChuck blow up Guybrush first and having a crap version of Ozzie Mandrill turn up for no reason.
