Mojo's throwback reviews continue! 12 Mar, 2010 / Comments: 8

Even though we were arguably the most appropriate web site on the entire internet to review The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, we ended up being the only one not to do so. In preparation for the hotly anticipated LeChuck's Revenge revamp, we've rectified the situation.

Note: Apologies for all the broken and/or weird stuff you may have observed while I was getting this published - Mojo has a few miles on her. Also, for anyone who cares, the score is supposed to be 3.5 skulls - we'll get that fixed at some point, I'm sure.

Very well rounded review, I could'nt agree more. Especially the idea of it being an 'addition' and not a replacement.

What a perfect medium to revisit the game with amazing music, vocals and a clean up of the graphics.

I'd say recognizing that the art direction in this version of the game is both lackluster and completely inappropriate is not simply the result of nostalgia.

When the special edition was announced, I showed the contrasted screenshots, closeups, and cover art to artist friends who had never played the LEC games at all, and the reaction was uniformly negative towards the crummy dollar-store-coloring-book plasticky photoshop art when compared to art direction (and, really, even the art's execution) in the original game and box art.

Box art? Since when was the game's original box art anything but a standalone slice of awesome trying to mimic the vibe of a movie poster rather than an actual depiction of what the game looked like?

Excellent review - perfect account of the SE's strengths and weaknesses.

    Seconded.

Excellent review there, even if we get 1/5 for timeliness once again (although I can't talk given what review I'm just preparing).

I am very, very much looking forward to seeing how LucasArts improves upon this for MI2. Music though, can't be improved - if it's as good as MI1 SE, I'll be in heaven.

Well, maybe a little less of the woodwind. MI2 was big on....err, some base-sounding instrument, IIRC.
