Mojo looks back on 15 years of Brütal Legend 23 Oct, 2024 / 4 comments

Double Fine published their appropriately loving tribute to their sophomore release last week, so why shouldn’t Mojo get in on the action on this most prestigious anniversary?

For us, the fun was revisiting what it was like to follow the game’s development all those years back, and it was quite the odyssey. In fact, we think it all played out a bit spicier than you may have mellowed it down to in your headcanon, though we should probably speak for ourselves given our well-established signs of mental deterioration. Anyway, join us as we travel back to the Age of Metal and relive the ecstasy and pain of Brütal Legend’s storied forging. Embrace your inner Doviculus, and you may recognize there is no distinction.

You forget all about the weird legal antics these days. I just remember the game... which was an odd one. The RTS stuff was such a massive slap in the face when you were playing it... it really comes out of nowhere. You get no opportunity to get better at it, you're just thrown in the deep end. It's such an odd experience.

The world and lore is so wonderful... but it overshadowed this completely other game that was lurking inside it. Maybe if the RTS stuff had featured more regularly, from the beginning, and had given the opportunity for players to learn the ropes and practice throughout the game, it would have been perfect.

But if you loved the RTS stuff, then there was a big story mode in the way. And if you loved the story mode, there was RTS stuff to content with. It felt like two different games forced together in an incohesive way.

A thoroughly enjoyable stroll through history there. It’s so easy to forget what a tumultuous roller coaster ride it all was back then.

Great article. I still really like this game, for all its flaws. I sometimes listen to the music it introduced me to at the gym, too. How the game pauses to ask you about gore and swearing is still peak, too.

I hope we return to that world someday.
