MI2 concept art: evolution of a beard (UPDATED) 13 May, 2010 / 8 comments

On the official Monkey Island Facebook page, LEC has followed up their gradual releases of MI2: Special Edition screenshots (by the way, I don't think we mentioned the last two on the front page) with some gradually released character concepts. You can see Herman Toothrot's transformation from 1991 sprite to 2010 sketch, but you'll no doubt be most interested in the various passes they made at Guybrush's revamp (v1, v2, v3, v4) before landing on the final version, especially with regard to his age and similarities to his CMI counterpart.

Update by ATMachine: V5 Guybrush can now be found at Kotaku. For those who've been having trouble viewing the previous Guybrush concepts, the link also contains color-corrected versions of those, which should alleviate the problem. Be sure to right-click on and "View" the images to see them full size!

I personally think V4 is kind of disgusting, with Guybrush looking more like a chubby mong than the character I'd recognise from the original games' cover art or the sequels.

Agh, why do they always seem to go for one of the ugliest ones. I'd go with V3 or V4, but not the last one.
Then again, I'll probably get used to him after playing the game for a while.
It just annoys me a little that they always seem to end up with one of the worst ones.

They should have showed us this when they were still working on it, to at least get a pointer to what the fans wanted.

Oh man someone else is using my avatar, how confusing. I thought I'd replied and forgotten! :P

V3 looks the best to me. I love the fact it heavily resembles the CMI/TMI Guybrush.

Snugglecakes, these are only concept art aren't they? I don't think it's worth worrying about too much — the in-game hair looks great from what I've seen.

v4 is the closest to the original so wins easily. But once again, can someone please explain to me... what's with the hair? I really must be missing something here. Why in v3 and v4 is the hair so... 3d-like? His boots are smooth, his coat is smooth, why is his hair so stupid? I can't for the life of me work out why they insist on making it look like my first ever 3D object, plonked on top of his head. What's wrong with just some smooth hair, some whisps out of place, and some clever texturing? It's hand drawn, so hand draw it already. No hair looks like this. If they want reference, look at the original box art. That's what his hair looks like, they decided so themselves. I really don't mind saying that despite the vastly improved hairSTYLE over the first SE, this is still a total mess. Just draw some hair on his head ffs! Why put a piece of broken pottery on his head?

    I like v1 (if I can't choose v0...).
    But I love Herman v1. :D

I like v2, it's the right mix of idiot and scummy pirate.

I think the chubby v1 is the best

I think I like v4 more than the one they used now. His face is too sweet now. Guybrush can be quite a bastard in MI2.
