Lucasarts Deploys Easily Dismissible IP 15 Mar, 2004 / Comments: 41

LucasArts is to 'Deploy Mercenaries'

Yes. After dumping a nice creative intellectual property, they have luckily found themselves something to take it's place, and noticing that the PS2 doesn't have quite enough generic third person war combat games have decided to grace us with yet another one. Hopefully the crowded market will be thankful for this new and riveting concept.

We'd heard about Mercenaries before, but now we've been blessed with official confirmation. Check out this press release:
LONDON, U.K. - March 15, 2004 - LucasArts officially announced today that it will deploy Mercenaries, an open-ended third person combat-action game this fall for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox video game system from Microsoft. Set in North Korea where a coup has plunged the troubled nation into chaos, an elite private military company has dispatched a lone mercenary to track down 52 fugitive members of the old hardliner regime before they can launch a nuclear attack.

Mercenaries will give gamers the opportunity to live out their action movie fantasies with its explosive combat and non-linear gameplay set in massive interactive environments. If you can see it -- you can steal it, use it or blow it up. Players can demonstrate their creativity in the hunt for enemy combatants using more than 30 real-world military weapons [31 weapons ???]. Gamers will be able to assume the role of one of three different mercenaries and will have the opportunity to call in air strikes and blahblahblah blah blah blah ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Once again proving that LucasArts has shot it's self in its own head.
For more information check out this 404 error.

Update: Unfortunately, the 404 error now successfully points to the Mercenaries product page. Check out some screenshots!

What a suprise LEC decides to release a game in a market which is oversaturated to high heaven, I have one word to say about this game: BORING!

LEC come back when you have something half decent to show us, or just get back in the hole you dug yourself in.
  • SiN on 17 Mar, 2004, 21:46…
woohoo ... the new and improved cynical mix n mojo! looks okay-ish ... i mean, it looks like a fine game, but not something im gonna go out and buy. sam & max 2 ... THAT i would buy
  • PirateKingChris on 16 Mar, 2004, 17:38…
OMG YES!!! The screenshots make me want to run out into the streets, fully-automatic weapon in hands, firing randomly into my surroundings! YESSSS!! I mean, that WAS the point, right?
  • PirateKingChris on 16 Mar, 2004, 17:27…
Pfft...Idiots. By the way, love the clearly negative way this update was posted :)
  • Kingzjester on 16 Mar, 2004, 17:11…
You know, maybe if we get a voodoo lady to throw a curse at LucasArts, maybe that would freak them out, and then send them the copy of the invoice...
  • spaff on 16 Mar, 2004, 14:34…
OMFG HOLY CRAP!!!111 have you seen those screenshots yet? I've completley changed my mind about this game now I've seen them, the awe inspiring 3d renders explode into your haggared peepers sending you into a shock of fantasy and bewilderment........

I can safely say that if this trashy poor quality game was never published the world would not miss it. poor choice marketeers, f*cking poor choice. Thanks so much for your dedication to us, and good luck finding some new fans, because you can stick your fanship up your fucking arse you bunch of bastards. What the fuck is wrong with you?!?!!

    clouded you future is.....

  • PirateKingChris on 16 Mar, 2004, 17:34…
I love how you censored f*ck once, and none of the rest of the fucking time :)
  • spaff on 16 Mar, 2004, 21:03…
yeah I soon grew bored of that.
  • GregD on 19 Mar, 2004, 13:38…
Well said spaff... LEC Marketing Dept. and Managers are a bunch of fucking losers.
  • EyesOpen on 16 Mar, 2004, 14:30…
Why can't EA just buy out Lucasarts and get all of this over with already? All we need is Lucasarts to start doing yearly sports games, and we'll be all set.

LEC is loosing every aspect of what made it so great! What is the logic behind this move? What a perfectly generic game! For god's sake its called "MERCENARIES" Doesn't anyone at LEC see that this game is beneinth them? They are going to join THIS with the ranks of MI, Day of the Tenticle, the Dig, and Indania Jones! There is no hope for this company. I will not by anything else from them until they turn themselves around, and everyone else that once cared about this company should do the same!
  • Jayel on 16 Mar, 2004, 01:52…
Not a single game in existence that sets in Korea ever sold well. although a few were quite good. Mig Alley comes to mind.
  • RumRogerz on 15 Mar, 2004, 21:44…
Im still not interested in LucasArts stupid marketing tactics.
"yes yes, lets cancel sam and max 2; this way we'll have more money to produce this shitty game on the xbox and ps2!!!! My god were genious!"
    Morons.
    Go to hell

A corollary to what I said a second ago: You can't spell laxative without L.A.!
  • Scummbuddy on 15 Mar, 2004, 23:08…
    yeah, take THAT Los Angeles!
  • Kingzjester on 16 Mar, 2004, 17:05…
Well, yeah, but it also applies to LucasArts, you see...
  • Kingzjester on 15 Mar, 2004, 20:05…
I think I speak for all of us here when I say: FLYING BRAMBLES!
  • the lady lex on 15 Mar, 2004, 19:56…
I don't like guns, or Korea, and especially lone mercenaries with action movie fantasies like Bruce Willis with a dodgy ripped vest anahilating terrorists with a handgun and a tank he stole from the Nazi repair yard next door. See how it begins?
  • spaff on 15 Mar, 2004, 20:04…
    ;)
  • Sheriff Gringo on 15 Mar, 2004, 19:31…
Yay! Now I can live out my fantasy of living in North Korea and shooting people in the face.

Thank you LEC! YOU MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE!
  • Dalixam on 15 Mar, 2004, 18:50…
    This game seems so uninteresting.

    I like the 404 error.
  • Dalixam on 15 Mar, 2004, 18:54…
Btw. I see how cancelling a unique game and focusing on a game that resembles thousands out there is a wise decision.

I bet this won't get cancelled and it'll sell much less than S&M would have.
  • Marek on 15 Mar, 2004, 18:28…
OMG THEY'VE UNLEASHED A DEPLOYMENT OF ARMED & DANGEROUS MERCENARIES WOOT!!
  • Scummbuddy on 15 Mar, 2004, 17:06…
We can only hope that PC Gamer will put it on their top 10 list, so LucasArts will cancel this one too.

    It just makes sense.
  • grogmonkey on 16 Mar, 2004, 02:02…
well put, is there any hope for this company?
  • lagamorph321 on 15 Mar, 2004, 16:54…
    Sigh
  • Remi O on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:49…
Looks rather underwhelming. I don't see why they expect to sell a lot of this game with (most likely better) games like Splinter Cell 2, Metal Gear Whatever and Hitman 3 taking up most of the market.
  • telarium on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:19…
Now, now... to be fair, maybe there are some more original qualities to the game that we can't see from the press writeup.

    Or maybe not.
  • CaliMonk on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:16…
You play a Mercenaries!@# OMG THATS SOOO COOL ALL MY LIFE I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A GAME THAT DOES THAT!@#

Oh wait i already played such a game many many years ago.. bah.
  • telarium on 15 Mar, 2004, 14:59…
    Meow!
  • spaff on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:02…
This is PROOF that they can't market for shit. they need same old type shit that sells it'self because it has either a jedi on the front or some some guy with a load of guns and some face paint... probably standing over some corpses.
  • telarium on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:10…
What they really need is a game where a soldier during WWII finds a secret military science lab on Mars. Then they accidentally open a mysterious portal and fight various aliens, ninjas, zombies, dragons, and Nazis.

Martian Nazis. Yeah, that's the ticket. And deer! Tap into that Deer Hunter market. Man, that would sell like friggin' hotcakes!

Don't forget to add the 3D level that takes place in a warehouse full of boxes. This is a must.
  • Jake on 15 Mar, 2004, 15:47…
also: 3d ice level is mandatory, and possibly a tennis game (though I don't get that reference)
  • spaff on 15 Mar, 2004, 20:06…
the main character should also be able to shake her ass to the beat as the enemy martian heads come fying past her pretty full 3d rendered face and she volleys them straight back into the deer Tim henman style all the time shouting 'woop' and being sick on the floor.
  • Jake on 15 Mar, 2004, 14:51…
Sam, is "dismissable" a real word?
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 15 Mar, 2004, 14:45…
I still maintain that NOT complaining is a stupid and pointless thing to do.

And since we can only GUESS that complaining might be pointless, we may as well take that chance. Otherwise LucasArts is going to become a turd factory.
  • Samandmax221 on 20 Mar, 2004, 22:10…
This game better at least have Sam and Max cameos! Thats still not enough after they dumped SnM. Besides it's an over copeid genre.
