LucasArts to fracture 03 May, 2007, 08:00 / 14 comments

Well, to release Fracture, more accurately. As Mojo reported a month back the game takes place during a future US Civil War. West Coast vs East Coast. I'd have thought the 2 coasts would have teamed up against the middle States myself.

Here's the expected Big Jimming;
"Exciting new intellectual properties serve a vital role to the growth of LucasArts," said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "Fracture represents the next step in this company initiative, complete with the intriguing story and compelling characters audiences expect of a LucasArts release."

And for all the rest of the details and trailer and what-not, jump on over to the game's official website: terraindeformation.com

Update by Udvarnoky: Gamespot has a preview of the game up.

I actually thought something was going to go wrong in LucasArts until I realized it was about the game's title.

    No way!

I enjoyed the trailer (and even moreso it having to share space with Sam & Max advertisements on Yahoo! Games) but it strikes me as much the same type of title as Mercenaries - could be a fun game but nothing to get particularly excited about. Is releasing a familiar-looking war-themed shooter that happens to have a non-franchise name every two years really supposed to adequately cover the company's share of new IP?

Still, it's not a game I'd be embarrassed to buy. I guess you've got to let LucasArts hit it big with nonoriginal original games before they'll move on to original ones. Also, so much for 2007 being the company's big 25th anniversary bash. I count zero games slated for 2007 so far what with the cancellation of Traxion and the delay of Indy and Force Unleashed into next year. Maybe they could, I dunno, make their company store include products that were released more than three years ago. Cash in on At World's End with a well-timed Monkey Island compilation. "Dukes of Hazzard" and "Bewitched" at least did good on DVD!

Funnily enough Mercenaries is one of the few games I wouldn't compare it to. I WOULD, however, compare it to Giants, Armed & Dangerous, Halo (original 3rd Person version), Republic Commando, Lost Planet, Outcast (style rather than gameplay), Star Wars Battlefront, and even (god forbid) RTX Red Rock (also style-wise).

    Okay, maybe Mercenaries too.

And are they fond of that grenade or what?

If you're going to compare the game to Giants or Armed & Dangerous, you need to be able to point out the sense of humor or personality that you're seeing from the screenshots and trailer.

Well they all have "Funny" weapons, I guess.

...well I mean it looks over the top in the way most "blow everything up" shooters are, but it still seems to take itself seriously. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but let's call a spade a spade, huh?

Haha... the last two headlines have been the best ever!

This looks to me to be the response to losing the Mercenaries franchise.

I don't know about anyone else, but I haven't expected an intriguing story or compelling characters from Lucasarts for a while now. Still I'd like to be proved wrong and this could be the game to do it. Consider me cautiously optimistic.

    Fingers crossed.

It possibly might have an interesting story, but from first glimpse I have doubts about "compelling characterts".
  • VSTM on 04 May, 2007, 19:07…
My knee jerk reaction was "Compelling characters my @#$."

Seriously though, wouldn't red states vs blue states make more sense in a civil war context? Unless you're talking about rap wars...or maybe racial wars...or drug wars..maybe.
