LucasArts Soundtracks ordered to remove some soundtracks 06 Oct, 2004, 06:32 / 9 comments

The excellent music site LucasArts Soundtracks has been ordered by LucasArts to take down all content relating to Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Specifically, the soundtracks now removed were from:

  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine
  • Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
  • Star Wars: Force Commander
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader
  • Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III - Rebel Strike
  • Star Wars: Dark Forces

Apparently, this is due to the fact that LucasArts only licensed the rights to use the movie music in these games, and doesn't want to risk upsetting the other copyright holders.

It's worth noting that all of the game soundtracks not related to those two franchises are still available. Still, this is pretty sad news to hear.

Hehe... I very much doubt the Rogue Squadron series should be in that list. After all, the only actual Star Wars music there was the title theme, the rest of the music was done by European demoscene musician Chris Huelsbeck (of Giana Sisters megafame). Much of his music is already released for free (as is common in the Eurodemo scene) so I doubt he'd object...

Hey ATMachine I intentionally de-UL'd those games so that the post wouldn't take up so much vertical space, but I guess it's good to see that you actively disagree with my decision to do so :)

I figure they stand out more this way. Besides, the post now isn't quite as large as the original version; it's no longer using blockquotes.

"It's worth noting that all of the game soundtracks not relating to those two licenses are still available." I dont know what exactly that means. Could you elaborate, explain further.

It means, that only game-soundtracks from the "Star Wars"- and "Indiana Jones"-franchises were asked to be taken down. The rights to these series don't lie with LucasArts. All the other game-franchises on my site were basically invented by LucasArts, so they own the rights to them. (and so I guess they are cool with THOSE soundtracks being on my site)
