"When Guybrush is kidnapped by LeChuck and taken to the carnival, LeChuck claims responsibility for Marley's "death" in the boat race off the coast of Australia all those years ago along with the murders of the rest of the original Big Whoop crew."

Not Australia. Only the boat race in America is mentioned in both MI2 and CMI. Australia was first mentioned in EMI. So I guess that leaves another hole to fill =/

    Another great secret history article.
I've seen that not all responses are thát bad about EMI.
I actually tried to play it again, but the constant humming of my CD player put me off. Anyone know how I can play it off my hard drive, like Grim Fandango?
  • Kroms on 24 Feb, 2010, 22:14…
The EMI Launcher off Quick N Easy does that for you, I think.
  • Jeo on 24 Feb, 2010, 17:14…
I guess you could get a no cd crack. That's what I sometimes do so that I won't have to juggle with the cds.
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2010, 05:17…
    I didn't know a MI5 was put into pre-production (?) at LucasArts. What's the story?
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Feb, 2010, 13:58…
    I don't see what you're referring to.

Also, I don't know how the score got changed, but it's supposed to be 4/5.
  • Gabez on 24 Feb, 2010, 19:06…
I went for a bath last night after publishing the article, and when I got back it was set to 2/5!

    Personally, I definitely think it's a 4/5 game.

Also... haha! It looks like it's been set to 2 again! I think this game of score tennis could continue for some time (but I'm staying out of it)
  • Remi O on 24 Feb, 2010, 19:31…
    F! F! S!

Whoever is editing it, make sure that the score is set correctly before saving. It's a Mojo 9 "feature" for it not to be.

    Also, I re-sat it to 4 again.
  • elTee on 24 Feb, 2010, 20:25…
    Remi's back!
  • Remi O on 25 Feb, 2010, 15:37…
    No, he's not!
  • Jayel on 24 Feb, 2010, 17:11…
Ah, 4/5 makes more sense! I thought that the text read like a solid 3~4 star/skull game. Also... Murrayball?!? Can't believe I never knew about it!
  • The Tingler on 25 Feb, 2010, 02:43…
Yep. Incidentally, there's another secret involving Murray that's got in the same way as Murrayball on the PC. I think after spinning him around enough, typing 'skull' will make him appear and laugh at you.
  • Remi O on 24 Feb, 2010, 15:03…
I put it back to 4.
  • Glo_kidd on 24 Feb, 2010, 05:09…
darn, i guess jason didnt get my email with my reader opinion :(
  • Glo_kidd on 24 Feb, 2010, 18:27…
checking my sent box and it says that my email went out 01/08/10, im a little saddened to see that it didn't make it into the readers contributions :( probably got eaten by the junk folder or something. I could re-send if necessary and not too late
  • Gabez on 24 Feb, 2010, 19:02…
Yeah, please sent it to me by clicking on my name and pasting it in. Sorry it got left out -- sometimes things just fall through the cracks.
  • Glo_kidd on 24 Feb, 2010, 21:21…
k, ive sent the message i think, when i clicked send it said "Thanks your message has been sent to gabez" then the page redirects and says i have forgotten to fill something in and to retry. so im not sure but you might have two messages from me
  • Gabez on 24 Feb, 2010, 21:24…
Yeah, the exact same thing happened when I tried to contact you myself (Mojo 9 is collapsing)

Can you send it in a forum PM, or just paste it here?
  • The Tingler on 25 Feb, 2010, 02:44…
It knows its time is nearly up... it's been around too long, it's gained sentience!
  • Glo_kidd on 24 Feb, 2010, 22:08…
    Ah, its in now :D
Thanks again for all the help Gabez :)
Also thanks for another fantastic read guys, i cant wait to see what you do next :D
  • clone2727 on 23 Feb, 2010, 23:33…
Any way to get a non-anagrammed version of that logo? Guess we could also ask for a non-3D version of EFMI...
  • Jayel on 24 Feb, 2010, 17:07…
sorry, don't intend to release non-anaglyphic version. :)
Even if you aren't wearing the 3d glasses, you are viewing it the way it's meant to be viewed. I'm not saying that to drive the point home or anything (ie "it's 3d! get it?"), it's just that I think the double vision thing adds a bit of magical quality to it, and also it nicely masks the utter lack of detail that I'm not proud of.
  • Ascovel on 24 Feb, 2010, 18:08…
The art is truly brilliant - I'd love to play a trippy Monkey Island game with this style.
  • Jayel on 24 Feb, 2010, 19:15…
    thanks!
  • oldschool_joe on 23 Feb, 2010, 22:55…
The explanation for the toothrot backstory sounds pretty far fetched to me. Toothrot ending up on MI is just an assumption that isn't based on the cutscene? Well "H.T. Marley" explicitely states twice during the cutscene that he tells the whole story to explain how he got to Monkey Island. The theory that he just ended up somewhere in the caribbean and lived several years unrecognised amongst his former loyal subjects before finally sailing off with the Sea Monkey doesn't convince me at all, it's not even a nice try imho.
  • Jeo on 24 Feb, 2010, 10:54…
Actually, I like this theory since it's really close to the one I had back when the game was released. It works kind of well with the cutscene but I'm pretty sure there was a dialogue option after that where Herman flat out states that he washed up on Monkey Island with a busted accordion next to him. I can't confirm this right now, but that would pretty much discredit the whole theory, however nice it is.

I've been thinking about this way too much but what can I say? It's fun.
  • AlfredJ on 23 Feb, 2010, 23:03…
Well, to be fair, it is stated several times within the article that you have to jump through several hoops to make the Toothrot-theory work. I was just about to post that I rather liked his effort, and that I wouldn't mind Telltale using that article if they ever wanted to use Herman again in the future.
  • bgbennyboy on 23 Feb, 2010, 22:24…
    Superb article as always!

Looking through the LEC\Misc folder on my hd reminds me of other stuff:
I think the EMI font might be Caslon Antique rather than Weathered SF (its the one that's inside a zip file called EFMI_Font.zip anyway)

The PS2 version has a bunch of concept art that the PC version doesn't have. I've no idea how its unlocked or viewed in-game, I only know about it because I made this (http://quick.mixnmojo.com/mi-background-viewer) years ago in order to rip the PS2 concept art for the Scumm bar. The 'randy sucks' thing was found using the tool too, it was in one of the backgrounds in the pc version, in part of the tiles that gets rendered off screen.

My EMI Launcher/Setup programs come in handy for some people.
The launcher lets you run toggle fullscreen/windowed and can patch the game to run in a higher resolution than the original 640x480.
    http://quick.mixnmojo.com/emi-launcher

The installer that comes with the game can be problematic with newer versions of Windows and refuses to work at all on 64 bit Windows, so is the only way to install the game for some people.

Like Grim, EMI has an inbuilt debug mode that lets you jump between rooms and other stuff, however no-ones ever found a way of activating it. Sample debug stuff:
PrintDebug('//**** WARNING: Object:set_name, no system name specified for inventory prop! FIX THIS NOW! See Rich for an explanation if you're confused')
  • Ascovel on 23 Feb, 2010, 21:52…
The excellent puzzle design was actually the only good thing about this game. The dialogs and story were its weakest aspects.
  • Remi O on 23 Feb, 2010, 21:54…
Glad to see you state that as a fact, not an opinion.
  • Ascovel on 23 Feb, 2010, 22:19…
I'm not sure what difference do you see between an opinion and someone's statement of facts. Do you mean I need to appear shy and uncertain when I'm expressing my convictions?
  • Remi O on 23 Feb, 2010, 22:22…
No. Strangely enough there is a middle ground.
  • Ascovel on 23 Feb, 2010, 22:34…
Hey, I didn't mean to be rude. I just think the important content of my opinion remains the same, regardless if I add "It is my opinion that" at the beginning or not.
  • The Tingler on 24 Feb, 2010, 02:22…
You add 'I think' to the sentence, rather than 'it is thus'.
  • elTee on 24 Feb, 2010, 13:16…
Have you ever read any of your own reviews?
  • The Tingler on 25 Feb, 2010, 02:45…
    Touch¨¦.
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 08:56…
Looks like Mojo doesn't support "é"
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 08:56…
Looks like Mojo doesn't support "é"
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 08:57…
But it still has bugs... nice :)
  • elTee on 25 Feb, 2010, 09:10…
    Mojo is hilarious :(
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 10:17…
So, how narrow can this thing go?
  • The Tingler on 25 Feb, 2010, 12:04…
It's like vertical limbo! (The sport, not the void of eternal nothingness)
  • clone2727 on 25 Feb, 2010, 13:26…
I think we tried to go completely vertical for Mojo's 10th Anniversary, but didn't quite make it.
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 14:46…
Why didn't you make it? It's just stupid questions like this that's necessary.
  • clone2727 on 25 Feb, 2010, 18:23…
I don't recall. I'll post this comment and probably another one after I go look at that post.
  • clone2727 on 25 Feb, 2010, 18:26…
The post just seems to have stretched out the news column.
  • Laserschwert on 25 Feb, 2010, 19:09…
Well, that's cheap. You hear that, Mojo? CHEAP!
  • Lagomorph on 26 Feb, 2010, 17:57…
So, it's actually making the page wider and wider?!? Let's see how far we can stretch it then! :D
  • Gabez on 26 Feb, 2010, 18:58…
STOP REPLYING TO THIS COMMENT THREAD YOU'RE RUINING THE SITE! Seriously, every single word is having an awful affect on the design! You must stop! Now! Not one word more! Please!
  • elTee on 26 Feb, 2010, 20:23…
    Approved.
  • Lagomorph on 01 Mar, 2010, 10:35…
Sorry, I didn't know it was such a stretch.
I won't comment anymore on this thread. Especially not with long words like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
  • Jennifer on 02 Mar, 2010, 03:27…
Even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious.
  • elTee on 23 Feb, 2010, 21:36…
That image is superb - best of the series. How ironic!

    Ho ho!
  • Ascovel on 23 Feb, 2010, 21:51…
Yeah. It's even more 3D than the game was.
