This week we're looking at The Dig, or "--HISTORY DELETED--" as it's known at LucasArts.

Find out about thrilling meetings with Spielberg, explosive development teams, and more mysterious alien forces than you can shake a decapitated hand at! Behold... The Dig!!

Thanks a lot to Dan Lee for the header art, to Sean Clark and Bills Eaken and Tiller for their informative answers, and to everyone who wrote in with their opinions and memories.

Bill Eaken's interview finally reveals the game that the James Bond type text at the end of the Fate of Atlantis credits was alluding to.

Just reading about the included 4th pair of shoes. Never noticed before, and now I know why. It's absolutely indistinguishable from the rocks that are scattered around the foreground.

    300,000 million copies???? whow.
Apart from that, great article, as always!

    Thanks -- fixed that.

Fixed a minor linkage error. But why is there a page 7?

I disagree that The Dig marked the end of the golden era. CMI was quite impressive for what it was, and beautiful to boot. And Grim Fandango... Well, we'll ride a demon hot rod over that skeletal bridge when we come to it. Needless to say, though, we're moving into the endgame...

"Golden Era" by my definition involves the quantity of output and their financial success.
  • Udvarnoky on 11 Mar, 2009, 04:07…
Also I very much agree with the notion that CMI and Grim were among the best, if not the best, product LEC ever put out, adventure or otherwise.
  • Kroms on 11 Mar, 2009, 05:52…
They certainly the two most "perfect" games they put out. Not revolutionary in the SMI way, but as far as mostly-great puzzles, excellent writing, great artwork, creativity, rich immersive world, they were the two best.

I think what they mean this was the end of when LucasArts would continuously produce Adventure Games - or whenever the writer graduated high school.

    Superb header art. Very creative.
  • Thrik on 15 Mar, 2009, 04:10…
    Yes, total quality right there.
  • Capn_Nacho on 11 Mar, 2009, 04:05…
Though I've not played more than the demo, yes, I absolutely adore this graphic. The cutout look is adorable.
  • The Tingler on 11 Mar, 2009, 15:02…
If the full game was like that, I'm sure I actually would've enjoyed it!
  • Capn_Nacho on 12 Mar, 2009, 02:00…
    Zing!
  • Lagomorph on 10 Mar, 2009, 21:28…
    Omg!
I forgot to send in my Opinion this time!
    Can I still send it?
  • Gabez on 10 Mar, 2009, 21:29…
Sure! Just e-mail it to me by clicking on my name.
  • Cheeseness on 13 Mar, 2009, 07:22…
Can I send one in too? I've had my head buried in the sand for the last two months and didn't realise I'd missed it.
  • Lagomorph on 11 Mar, 2009, 11:39…
Hey, I send it, I just don't know if it arrived. I got this message that I didn't enter something. Really strange.
  • Gabez on 11 Mar, 2009, 11:55…
    Nope, I got it, thanks!
  • neon_git on 10 Mar, 2009, 21:26…
Wha!?! We nearly had a Boba Fett adventure game? Oh man I would've been all over that. Damn suits.
  • Ascovel on 10 Mar, 2009, 21:46…
Any Star Wars adventure game could have been... something.
  • Icebox on 10 Mar, 2009, 22:04…
Dude, you've just opened pandora's box. Limitless potential, unstoppable implications.
  • Ascovel on 10 Mar, 2009, 22:56…
Limitless potential, but not for a limitless game. Think how much less content would a Star Wars adventure game fit than a Star Wars MMORPG. You could actually run out of topics to discuss in relation to that theoretical game someday.
  • The Tingler on 11 Mar, 2009, 15:03…
It always surprised me that with LucasArts' skill at making adventure games, along with their success at Indiana Jones, they never attempted a Star Wars one.
  • jp-30 on 11 Mar, 2009, 18:24…
They did, C-3PO was to be the playable character. Apparently it was atrocious and scrapped very early on in development.

I heard this from an ex-LucasArts employee a few years back.
  • Ascovel on 11 Mar, 2009, 18:33…
NOOOOOOOOO! How could they scrap it?!

I always wanted to be C-3PO.
