LucasArts has just issued a press release, announcing that they are working on an adventure game sequel to Sam and Max Hit The Road. The game, which was being developed by Infinite Machines before they allegedly kicked the bucket, will be co-directed by Mike Stemmle and should be released for Windows PC's in the first quarter of 2004. No word on the actual plot of the game, so we must wonder if it the setting still revolves around space. Here is the press release in full, and also... woohoo!
SAM & MAX TO HIT THE ROAD (AND OTHERS) IN LONG AWAITED CLASSIC ADVENTURE SEQUEL FROM LUCASARTS<:MORENEWS:>
Popular Madcap Dog and Rabbity Thing to Return for More Hilariously Skewed Adventures First Quarter 2004 on Windows PC
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- August 27, 2002 -- Sam & Max, interactive entertainment's most beloved canine and rabbit combo, hit the road again first quarter 2004 in a long awaited adventure comedy sequel for Windows PC from LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC. The follow up to the critically acclaimed 1993 adventure classic Sam & Max Hit the Road will dispatch the Freelance Police into a wild world of screwy and vaguely quixotic missions. Each one will be jam packed with nerve-jangling action, brain-busting puzzles, and the kind of easygoing banter one might expect from a talking dog and a naked, hyperkinetic bunny.
Sam & Max are based upon the "Sam & Max Freelance Police" comic book series created by Steve Purcell. LucasArts' Michael Stemmle, co-director of the award-winning original game, will direct the sequel.Update:(Spaff)
"Sam & Max Hit the Road is a classic and as close to being a signature game as any LucasArts has ever done," says Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts "The Sam & Max sequel, much like the recently announced Full Throttle II, perfectly complements LucasArts' renowned adventure game legacy and lends further support to the company's commitment to investing in and developing more of our original properties.

The game will have no connection to the one being worked on by Infinite Machine. It will be completley re-written.
something worth looking into edit WOHOO we broke the 120 mark
Whatever happened to the old Lucasarts? The Lucasarts that took risks, and created all-new franchises instead of milking existing ones?
I'm talking about the stuff that Lucasarts' internal development teams are working on: Star Wars titles, a sequel to Full Throttle, a sequel to Sam and Max... See a trend here?
It seems like the company has changed from being a bunch of artists and innovators to yet another soulless game publisher. They're just a small-scale EA or Sierra now.
tahts the comment nr. 112.
somebody post already we need to break the record
(BTW, I'm practically a post-Gilbert game hater as continuation comes, but as stand alone games, their not half bad, 'cept Monkey Kombat.)
*wonders if it can be done* By the way, nearly 90 comments for two days? It can be doubled!
to lucasarts If it aint broke, dont fix it
1. There shouldn't be action sequences (e.g. Monkey Combat, yuck), unless they fit into story and are made to be playable (e.g. Full Throttle). Action Sequences shouldn't also make the progress of the gameplay to halt. They are ADVENTURES, not action games.
2. These adventures should be ported to Mac, dammit.
And S&M would look better with 2D, since they are cartoon characters. And cartoons weren't 3D last time I checked.
The humor - we all know they can do that.
The game play - its a LucasArts trademark.
but if they (INSERT EXPLETIVE) my 2d lil buddies and transport them into an ugly dodgy looking 3d ver - I'm gonna be p|ssed!
I swear - I'll never buy another LucasArts game if they do that to Sam n Max - but if they do it well ---- I'll buy every single OTHER release LA ever do :) maybe.....you all know I will :)
I liked EMI - but thought the 3d sucked, guybrush looked his best in cmi......EMI icky (looking) CMI mmmmmm icing on my cake!
*Does little jig*
With my ears!
No, wait...
I see that!
With my eyes!
Sam & Max 2...
oh man, its like I'm 12 again! hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe!!!!!!
Seriously though, this is very cool. Hit the Road is one of the few LEC adventures I've been waiting a sequel for. This is it. I hope Steve is on the team.
I can't wait for Sam & Max to show up, in a new adventure game! Lets hope it's still in cartoon style to fit the cartoons:P
I've been hoping and praying, and finally they will make a sequel to it!!!!!!! :D
Tsk, and there was me thinking he was on about MI5. Nice surprise though. :)
Once again, Mojo pips everyone else to the post.
And oh yes, I think this is a given but: YAY!
2D FOREVER!!
---runs away screaming like a mad man-- {everyone just looks the other way}
Same with Full Throttle 2?
and did I forget to mention... WOOHOO!!
It's Lucasarts renaissance time folks =)
But I'd wish they'd do Day of the Tentacle instead.
oh and you obviously just dont deserve new lucasarts games :p
what i feel right now is fear that what happenend to monkey island and what will happen to full throttle is going to happen to sam, his furry friend and max, too.
I herald the announcement with trumpets a-waving! Mike Stemmle could do this justice and it is suggested in the announcement that it will be an adventure game, or at least an action adventure game. Who knows! I hope they make up with Steve Purcell, the greatest of all Lucasarts artists... :-)
when i said depressing i didn't mean depressing in the sense of hard or why-the-fuck-does-that-turtle-creature-not-start-walking-around depressing. i wanted to say - as usual - that i didn't like emi. :)
oh man, I'm not even dressed, I better put some clothes on.
FUCK YES!
Pardon my Serbian.
Translation: Sam & Max 2? YESSSSSS!!! :)))
Nom de dieu, ca fait bientot longtemps que j'attends ?a!
Trans : YipiKay!
AMO SIMON JEFFERY! DAVVERO!
I can't wait.
I think we need a group-hug here, people.
the game wasnt the best adventure game around, but it sure had a good dose of authentic original humor :)
