LucasArts Announces Sam and Max 2! 27 Aug, 2002 / Comments: 125

LucasArts has just issued a press release, announcing that they are working on an adventure game sequel to Sam and Max Hit The Road. The game, which was being developed by Infinite Machines before they allegedly kicked the bucket, will be co-directed by Mike Stemmle and should be released for Windows PC's in the first quarter of 2004. No word on the actual plot of the game, so we must wonder if it the setting still revolves around space. Here is the press release in full, and also... woohoo!
SAM & MAX TO HIT THE ROAD (AND OTHERS) IN LONG AWAITED CLASSIC ADVENTURE SEQUEL FROM LUCASARTS

Popular Madcap Dog and Rabbity Thing to Return for More Hilariously Skewed Adventures First Quarter 2004 on Windows PC

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- August 27, 2002 -- Sam & Max, interactive entertainment's most beloved canine and rabbit combo, hit the road again first quarter 2004 in a long awaited adventure comedy sequel for Windows PC from LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC. The follow up to the critically acclaimed 1993 adventure classic Sam & Max Hit the Road will dispatch the Freelance Police into a wild world of screwy and vaguely quixotic missions. Each one will be jam packed with nerve-jangling action, brain-busting puzzles, and the kind of easygoing banter one might expect from a talking dog and a naked, hyperkinetic bunny.
<:MORENEWS:>
Sam & Max are based upon the "Sam & Max Freelance Police" comic book series created by Steve Purcell. LucasArts' Michael Stemmle, co-director of the award-winning original game, will direct the sequel.

"Sam & Max Hit the Road is a classic and as close to being a signature game as any LucasArts has ever done," says Simon Jeffery, president of LucasArts "The Sam & Max sequel, much like the recently announced Full Throttle II, perfectly complements LucasArts' renowned adventure game legacy and lends further support to the company's commitment to investing in and developing more of our original properties.

Although I liked Sam and Max, I'm disappointed in Lucasarts' decision to develop yet another sequel.

Whatever happened to the old Lucasarts? The Lucasarts that took risks, and created all-new franchises instead of milking existing ones?
  • telarium on 31 Aug, 2002, 16:00…
When you make such a statement, are you taking into account the upcoming games like Gladius, RTX Red Rock, Wrath, the Larry Holland WWII flight/action game, and the Planet Moon humorous action title?
  • Lemort on 01 Sep, 2002, 06:22…
Nope, because all the game's you've mentioned are third party titles.

I'm talking about the stuff that Lucasarts' internal development teams are working on: Star Wars titles, a sequel to Full Throttle, a sequel to Sam and Max... See a trend here?

It seems like the company has changed from being a bunch of artists and innovators to yet another soulless game publisher. They're just a small-scale EA or Sierra now.
  • telarium on 01 Sep, 2002, 08:18…
Gladius and RTX Red Rock are not third party titles. They are being done entirely in house.
  • Scummbuddy on 31 Aug, 2002, 08:54…
Stop adding posts about adding posts that have nothing to do with sam and max. I'd rather just see another person just say YAYY can't wait instead.

Does anyone know some news about indiana jones and the emperors tomb? that game ist not so far away like sam and max2.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

somebody post already we need to break the record
  • Scummbuddy on 29 Aug, 2002, 19:39…
Why have Sam and Max 2 without Steve Purcell totally on board? Oh wait, why did they continue Monkey Island. Money. Now we'll have the post-Purcell game haters just like we have post-Gilbert game haters. I love gaming communities.
(BTW, I'm practically a post-Gilbert game hater as continuation comes, but as stand alone games, their not half bad, 'cept Monkey Kombat.)
  • invisibelle on 31 Aug, 2002, 09:45…
Who says Purcell isn't involved? Technically Stemmle and Clark were the 2 leads on Hit The Road if I'm not mistaken, but Purcell still wrote the story and oversaw the artwork. (this is Jake btw)
  • Remi O on 31 Aug, 2002, 09:52…
I don't think he said Purcell wasn't involved, at least if the 'totally' is anything to go by.
  • Remi O on 29 Aug, 2002, 19:48…
I'm sure the whiners will come out of the woodwork as soon as the initial excitement dies down, but I don't think they can be compared to the post-Gilbert crowd. Stemmle was, after all, co-lead and co-designer of the first Sam & Max game, so I doubt the age-old "he doesn't understand the [insert game here] legacy" will be applied. Or so I hope. Because it's kind of a lacking argument.
  • Scummbuddy on 30 Aug, 2002, 10:45…
I agree with you on that idea, but I would not like it if Steve's writing wasn't on board like it was on the first game.
  • csenosiain on 29 Aug, 2002, 18:01…
106 posts and counting HEY telerium or Jake or Spaff whats the record for most comments for a news posts?
  • Kingzjester on 29 Aug, 2002, 18:04…
There was that time when we drove the post count to 120 -- if I'm not mistaken -- around the EMI controversy: Did it suck, or did it not suck. It sucked -- the game that is, not the controversy -- there is nothing as relaxing as a controversy:})
  • HyperKineticBunny on 29 Aug, 2002, 19:05…

We're close. The php breaking "Is Monkey Island 4 a real MI game?" broke 100, I believe.
  • telarium on 29 Aug, 2002, 11:54…
Oops, nevermind. Oh it's going to be a long day. I've removed my comment, but yes, Spaff's EMI Rant still holds the record I've been told.

yes - back then it were nearly or more than 200 posts ... i know, i started it and i'd do it again :)
  • tmfm2000 on 29 Aug, 2002, 05:53…
I doubt S&M2 will be in 3d. It probably wouldn't sell very well as all other games are 3d.
  • Jake on 29 Aug, 2002, 12:35…
I'm sure it will be 3D. I hope they do a good job. Sam & Max is pretty wacky, but especially in the comics the environments are pretty "real" and would translate well to 3D if done with the right spirit and atmosphere. Let's just say they'd better have someone who's good at moody lighting and Hawaiian print shirts.
  • csenosiain on 29 Aug, 2002, 18:16…
if they have to do it 3d lets hope the do it right

to lucasarts If it aint broke, dont fix it
  • boeffl on 29 Aug, 2002, 02:17…
2D-style is out....3d is in. and there should be action sequences like monkey combat in emi.
  • HyperKineticBunny on 29 Aug, 2002, 17:20…
While 2d is out 3d maybe in - I would still prefer to see Sam n Max in 2d - it would take LA more time and effort to make the 3d graphics and they could put that time into the humour and irony that make sam n max great, in EMI some of the humour was lost because of 'looks' If they used a similar graphics style to CMI where they can concentrate on humour and have cartoony style graphics I would be very very happy :) -- either way I'll buy it when it comes out :P 2d or 3d, crappy or fantastic!
  • csenosiain on 29 Aug, 2002, 18:14…
i think all LA adventure games should be realesed in a style like CMI or at least 2d
  • Scummbuddy on 29 Aug, 2002, 11:38…
Bunny Combat! Actually it could be in both Full Throttle 2 and Sam n Max 2 seeing as FT2 would be those little wind up bunnies and of course Max for Max.
  • JackTheGaffer on 29 Aug, 2002, 01:47…
I can die a very happy man now.
  • Arts on 29 Aug, 2002, 00:32…
Alrighty folks. It's a good thing (excellent) that LucasArts is going to make two adventures for our suffered souls, BUT:
    1. There shouldn't be action sequences (e.g. Monkey Combat, yuck), unless they fit into story and are made to be playable (e.g. Full Throttle). Action Sequences shouldn't also make the progress of the gameplay to halt. They are ADVENTURES, not action games.
    2. These adventures should be ported to Mac, dammit.
  • csenosiain on 29 Aug, 2002, 18:13…
lucasarts S&M is a great idea for an adventure game so dont f*** it up
  • Metallus on 29 Aug, 2002, 11:06…
I want it to be an action adventure with guns and running over things. Well, I do.
  • Arts on 29 Aug, 2002, 00:38…
Oh, and BRING BACK 2D. I have nothing against 3D if made properly yet fast enough to play with older machines. Which is impossible.
And S&M would look better with 2D, since they are cartoon characters. And cartoons weren't 3D last time I checked.
  • Scummbuddy on 29 Aug, 2002, 11:41…
I have seen Homer and Bart in 3d. Plus Courage the cowardly dog has recently jumped into 3d and these are all cartoons. Wait a second, am I actually defending 3d for cartoons? Everybody look into this red light, it is a deneuralizer. So, I sez to Maybel I sez, I sez...
  • HyperKineticBunny on 28 Aug, 2002, 21:40…
All I can say everyone - is if LucasArts makes Sam and Max (in 3d) as bad as they did with MI4 (I was very upset to see Guybrush look the way he did) I'm gonna cry.

The humor - we all know they can do that.

The game play - its a LucasArts trademark.

but if they (INSERT EXPLETIVE) my 2d lil buddies and transport them into an ugly dodgy looking 3d ver - I'm gonna be p|ssed!

I swear - I'll never buy another LucasArts game if they do that to Sam n Max - but if they do it well ---- I'll buy every single OTHER release LA ever do :) maybe.....you all know I will :)
  • Dalixam on 29 Aug, 2002, 04:22…
EMI was excellent, I hope they follow the same recipe for S&M2.

  • Jake on 28 Aug, 2002, 15:46…
Why? Don't think Sam & Max would work in space? I guess you haven't read the Bad Day on the Moon comic (hint: it's excellent).

I hate this game. It will be a lousy 3D attempt to catch the original game's humor and will suck incoherently and I hate the keyboard-driven interface and why won't they make it a text-adventure? *weep*

Seriously though, this is very cool. Hit the Road is one of the few LEC adventures I've been waiting a sequel for. This is it. I hope Steve is on the team.

  • boeffl on 28 Aug, 2002, 01:49…
I recently played Sam and Max Hit the road for the 10th time and it was quite funny. Now i'm interested if the game will be 3d like EMI. However, 2004 is far away and i would be happy if Indiana Jones is released soon.
  • HyperKineticBunny on 28 Aug, 2002, 21:31…
The only thing I hope is they get the comedy formulae right - I don't care if its 2d / 3d or even virtual reality. With EMI I thought it sucked because of the 3d - I don't want that to happen to Sam and Max that would just kill me!

I can't wait for Sam & Max to show up, in a new adventure game! Lets hope it's still in cartoon style to fit the cartoons:P

I've been hoping and praying, and finally they will make a sequel to it!!!!!!! :D

Well, heck, I was way off... Only yesterday I was reading this month's MCV (it's some industry mag thing) in work, in which it was celebrating LucasArts 20th anniversary; and there was this interview with Simon Jeffrey in it, in which he announced that the "adventure genre wasn't dead, it was "resting"", and that LucasArts would "soon announce the return of an old favourite".

Tsk, and there was me thinking he was on about MI5. Nice surprise though. :)

Once again, Mojo pips everyone else to the post.

I thought I smelled something. I suppose we are to assume that Steve Purcell is in on this, since they are his creations. This was one of the smartest things LucasArts could have done. I know I would have done it. I'm not against 3D, but I do not like it when its being tacked onto an old adventure that never used it OR NEEDS IT. New, original games could be fine on 3D, but just because we have 3d capabilites, doesn't mean you need to put it on. By the way, cel shading might not be so bad for this game.
    2D FOREVER!!

I herald the announcement with trumpets a-waving! Mike Stemmle could do this justice and it is suggested in the announcement that it will be an adventure game, or at least an action adventure game. Who knows! I hope they make up with Steve Purcell, the greatest of all Lucasarts artists... :-)

when i said depressing i didn't mean depressing in the sense of hard or why-the-fuck-does-that-turtle-creature-not-start-walking-around depressing. i wanted to say - as usual - that i didn't like emi. :)

"I hope there was nobody on that bus" - "Nobody we know at least". I don't care if this game is a fps, though of course I hope for adventure ;) MAN! How cool will they look in 3d?? YES YES YES!
  • Metallus on 27 Aug, 2002, 12:29…
