Throughout the year Mojo is going to be doing articles that look back on each of the classic LucasArts adventure games. We will be writing new reviews for each title as well as tossing in whatever miscellaneous nonsense it takes to give you, the loyal reader, the high level of quality you don't pay for. Think of it as the 25 year anniversary LucasArts forgot to celebrate.

Naturally, we'll be starting with Maniac Mansion, and we want some thoughts from you to include in the article. What's that? You haven't played the game in years or, gasp, not at all? Why not revisit this classic along with us, and send us your comments/rants/reflections about the game that started it all. Your submissions can be negative, positive, or completely irrelevant; just send them over to jharang@gmail.com, or alternatively click my name above and mail me that way. (Yes, that actually works! I was surprised too.)

You have until the 31st. Get cracking!

Update: Oh, you don't have it in your games collection? Or the graphics hurt your eyes? No matter, go here to download the fabled Maniac Mansion remake. Enjoy!

So I've got ScummVM, but I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down the game. All I've been able to dig up is a German version. Works well besides that though!

I've got the setup installer for it, but being on a mac I can't run an .exe. Anyone out there able to help?

Great game, but a terrible interface (although advanced for the time, I guess). Certainly ambitious, what with all the characters, but I bet 99% of players never bothered to go back and see the differences.

I've updated the story with a link to the remake. Not quite the original experience but close as dammit is to ebnnju.

Good idea. I think the remake still has a few showstopping bugs in it, but if they can be avoided it's a less unforgiving experience than the original game.

What bugs are they? I've never properly sat and played the remake. I know they had some limitations, but I didn't know there were odd major bugs?

I honestly forgot. I actually had a (very minor) part in the making of Maniac Mansion Deluxe, and I know there were still some issues. But the game can definitely be completed.

Also, if you own Day of the Tentacle, you can run the included Maniac Mansion datafiles on their own with ScummVM. When adding a new game, go into the DOTT directory, and then into the "maniac" directory within that, and choose add game. Maniac Mansion will show up in the ScummVM launcher main menu.

I would love to revisit the classic with Mojo. Any ideas how to get a Mac port of it? Is it even possible?
  • Zaarin on 02 Jan, 2008, 04:24…
Use the Mac port of ScummVM and the PC version of the game.

Okay. I've managed to find a PC version of it (with innocent whistling intended) and I think I've got the right ScummVM. I'll have to see if I can get it to work when I get home. :)

It's actually available natively for the Mac too, if you want to go that route. It's in the Mac version of Day of the Tentacle. Use the computer five times in Weird Ed's room (that will start the original Maniac Mansion).
