Lie And We'll Sic Our Legal Team On You 16 Sep, 2002 / Comments: 41

Ok everyone, it's time for a new poll. With the help of a very angry two headed baby, Tim Schafer quickly dispatched the Skeleton Guy / Robox tag team combo, making Schafer the winner of Mojo Poll Showdown '02. Who honestly cares (besides Tim Schafer's mom, maybe)? Well, nobody. That's why we're finally moving on from that showdown business and starting anew.

After reading comments in this recent news thread, we figured it would be fun to find out what people think about The Mojo these days. Have we sold out?

I don't know what "selling out" really entails, or to whom we'd sell out (Besides those horrendous popups that keep appearing, that is. Damn them). Anyway, maybe you know, so maybe you can vote and then yell at us about it in the comments.

I wouldn't say that Mixnmojo has sold out exactly, but ...

I'd like to see more unbiased reporting. Sometimes it seems like this site fawns over every piece of shoddy software that Lucasarts churns out. This can make you look like the worst kind of blinkered fanboys!

Sure, if a game is decent then give it plenty of coverage - Be enthusiastic! But if a game is shoddy, money spinning pap (and lets face it, if we're totally honest most of the stuff that Lucasarts churns out nowadays ranges from awful to average at best) then don't give it too much coverage, and inform readers that it is poor.

Basically, don't convey the view that you unconditionally like everything that Lucasarts makes, because it harms your integrity. Acknowledge Lucasarts' problems as well as their triumphs.

    Ummm... Err... and especially Wha?

We're not going to deny that we're big fat fanboys (not literally fat). I mean, hint: we run The International House of Mojo. We like LEC's heritage and it makes it hard to be a complete dick. But that doesn't mean that we won't (and haven't) reamed games that deserve it.

We're not going to completely pan a game just because it's not a graphic adventure, but we're not going to rant and drool over the next derivitive Star Wars game just because it is well marketed. Ironically we've been accused of both panning/ripping into anything LucasArts that isn't an adventure, and also accused of being ultimately drooly-fanboy nice to anything that LucasArts makes regardless of quality. There are good games and bad games and the ones that fall in between in any genre, and we try to express that.

One other note is that while LEC's recent titles haven't all been blockbusters (Not that they've always made blockbusters all the time anyways. Who here has played Metal Warriors?) many of their recent games haven't really sucked all that much. Sometimes they're lacking in visual glitz but make up for it with good stories and/or action (Starfighter, Battlegrounds), or sometimes its the other way around (Rogue Leader). Either way, I wouldn't call most of their recent games crap or terrible or 100%-avoid-on-sight.

Damn, you beat me to posting the Obi-Wan Review URL. :)
  • Remi O on 20 Sep, 2002, 10:34…
That Obi-Wan review is just so damn excellent. No really, it is.
  • Riffage on 18 Sep, 2002, 16:25…
maybe mojo should go deviantart style, pay to not see the ads
  • Haggis on 19 Sep, 2002, 02:16…
I like ads. No, I LOVE them. =)
  • matt on 17 Sep, 2002, 11:00…
no way - ... at least i'm coming back again and again. maybe I have sold out.

however - there aren't as much cool LEC games out there these days, maybe Mojo needs some new areas to report about and to get involved.
    world domination, anyone?
ok- now it's the international dominating house of mojo ... and i want to be the governour of a beautiful island deep in the caribbean -
  • The_Petrified_Monkey on 18 Sep, 2002, 01:46…
Dibs on Booty Island... And I'd look so good in a pink, Mardi Gras dress... Tee hee! :-)
  • telarium on 17 Sep, 2002, 12:10…
Well, LEC has quite a few more cool games in the works now than they did three years ago. But not as many cool games as they did five, six, seven, eight years ago.
  • matt on 18 Sep, 2002, 05:14…
you're right ... time rushes along like an along-rushing river. anyway, that's what i meant to say.

Ok so now were back to the normal polls. Thats good. I think the next poll should be "Should Mojo? have Sierra (Adventure) Related News"

Its just an idea really Im just MAD about adventure games (even Sierra)

So give me you're opinion and tell me what you think.
  • Haggis on 17 Sep, 2002, 13:28…
"Sierra News: Leisure Suit Larry 24 announced. King's Quest Kart Racing game canceled."
  • Bobo Donkey? on 20 Sep, 2002, 10:46…
Ha Ha Ha you make me laugh Haggis. I dont think anyone would want another shit Kart Racer (I mean just look at the Playstation? theres more Kart Racers on it than anything else) and I think Leisure Larry 24? isnt going to be out for another 412 years when some of Al Lowes great descendants decide to put together the link between Larry 23? and Larry 25?(Larry 4? had already been done in the year 2197 and they were just finished with Leisure Suit Larry 80?) and then after that they will try to once again stop one of Bill Gate's evil descendants who has had control of the world since King Quest 12 was made into a movie.
  • Jake on 17 Sep, 2002, 11:22…
Nobody on our staff really cares about Sierra games though. I'm sure if you wanted to find Sierra news you could. There's bound to be a Mojo equivilent on the Sierra side. As for asking whether or not our readers are fans of Sierra or not, we could probably do something like that. Also of course if you want general adventure game news be sure to check out Adventure Gamers if you haven't already.
  • Bobo Donkey? on 20 Sep, 2002, 11:25…
Wow it's amazing how many comments are posted whenever I mention the word Sierra?, isnt it?

To be honest I wasnt like this last year. Last year I hadnt even signed up for a Mojo? account (because its not even my computer that has the Internet but thats a different story) I went to my relatives brand new house and got a shot on her brand new computer and downloaded several Nintendo ROMs or whatever (which was what I was doing around the time anyway) til I discovered Abandonware links and proceeded to download a couple LucasArts? Adventures to put on some disks and take home with me. Several days or whatever later when I had played through those games I got a little bored so I decided to try "Leisure Suit Larry?" to see what it was like and from then on I was hooked. I started downloading Sierra Games and other things as well and keeping them on a CD which got damaged last March and unfortunately the abandonware sites took the games off so I had to rely on a search engine. I got all those games back and some more of those sequels but I wont rest until I've bought or downloaded then played ALL the Adventure Games (Just LucasArts? and Sierra? games) even if it mean piracy BWAHAHAHAHAHA....

err... Did I just say that out loud?

    You said it outloud, twice.
  • Bobo Donkey? on 22 Sep, 2002, 11:27…
SHIT. Sorry about that the computer was fucked up at the time so I decided to try it again but then it STILL didnt say whether or not my comment had been posted so I just gave up. Maybe there should be a "Delete Message" function (I know it will take a while because you guys at Mojo? had just done the "edit" button so maybe that should be the next thing you guys could work on ok }8?)
  • Dalixam on 17 Sep, 2002, 11:00…
    No
  • Scummbuddy on 17 Sep, 2002, 11:23…
    HAHAHA, no.
  • Kingzjester on 17 Sep, 2002, 16:26…
Sierra? Are you kidding me? Somebody liked those adventure games?? Gabriel Knight was the only worthwhile one from that company, and as much as I enjoy Al Lowe's joke newsletter and big-titted women, I thought that the games were mediocre. That is why I'm here in the first place.
  • The_Petrified_Monkey on 18 Sep, 2002, 01:40…
I wouldn't say they are ALL mediocre... I mean, I'm as die-hard a Lucasarts fan as anyone here (possibly more so...) but I did quite like King's Quest 3... or was it 5? Anyway, which ever one it was, it had kewl music in a village that sounded a bit like an organ grinder with a monkey-style...

Erm, apart from that, yes, they are all poo :-)
  • Bobo Donkey? on 20 Sep, 2002, 10:51…
Im sure it might have been Kings Quest 5? cause Kings Quest 3? only had PC Speaker sound support.
  • Scummbuddy on 18 Sep, 2002, 20:19…
    nice save.

Erm, I can't seem to vote in this poll. I'm logged in and everything, and I definitely havn't voted yet, but I just see the results...
  • RaptorII on 16 Sep, 2002, 14:43…
Ads? Popups? What the hell are you guys talking about?

    >:)

Hehheheheh. Hosts + panicware.com's popup stopper.

Anyway, I will probably donate some funds some time soon, at least if you guys tell me where to send it. Heh

You know, folks still bitch about the pop-up ads -- but I have become immune to them.
  • matt on 17 Sep, 2002, 10:52…
you're right - except if those popups start to cry military songs or make chopper sounds... i always jump down on the ground and hide under my desk... these are insecure days in europe, you know?
  • Calvinh on 16 Sep, 2002, 14:08…
I say get rid of those pop-ups or at least hand me something so I can whack 'em.
