LEC + Disney? 28 Dec, 2000, 21:59 / 30 comments

My good friend emma was good enough to send me this account of a strange happening today:
Whilst watching television today an advert for EuroDisney came on and to my surprise there was Monkey Island music in it, LeChucks theme from EMI, and at the bottom of the screen it said "LucasFilm/Disney". What could this mean?...
Cool huh? Anyone else seen this?

Do Disney make any non-cartoonish-films anymore? A non-cartoonish MI movie would own :P

Disney does have the licenses from LucasFILM to do all the Indy and Star Wars attractions. (Me and my dad had a big argument about this a couple of weeks ago.) In other words, it's LucasFilm, not LucasArts, that has the deal with Disney, and I believe it's only for Star Wars and Indy characters. Also, the two companies are fairly seperate legal entities, so my prayers for a Monkey Island theme park won't be answered. Oh well, there's still hope. :)

You're all wrong! the TRUTH has been HIDDEN from you by DISNEY! Do not BE STUPID! It is OBVIOUS to ME that LUCASARTS is going to START MAKING DISNEY GAMES! Or maybe I'm just ACTING LIKE A FOOL and capitalising EVERY OTHER WORD!!! You have been WARNED! (No, that was not a lame Gene Ray (www.timecube.com) spoof. It was just a stupid joke.)

I thought Comments were a little bit of a waste of time but this one has made it all worth while!

This news is way old! I read it somewhere quite a while ago...

So are cupcakes. And Branny ol' boy? You have some unusual anger management issues. I know of a great doctor in New Jersey...

MMMMMMM. I could go for some cupcakes right now..... X-p

I love you blue tentacle (nothing personal). I love those who play the Devil's advocate and relish the prospect of Bipartianship. Yeah!
  • Metallus83 on 30 Dec, 2000, 22:53…
Ugh! I don't want LEC to merge w/Disney! I hope that, whatever this project is, is just a joint venture and not a merger. Mergers suck! It could mean the end of LEC!
  • bluetentacle on 30 Dec, 2000, 21:37…
THEN AGAIN EVERYONE.... how do we even know this is true? It could be just a lie! I'm just posting this for those who may think we are reporting this as FACT.

Hmm, perhaps we shall see Donald Duck in the next MI, or wait, there already was a duck in EMI... A-ha! The duck was sponsored by Disney and they thought the sponsor thing was so good they took some Monkey Island music for their commercial. Nah... I guess that's pretty far fetched, but still. And I do hope they won't make any Monkey Island movie, yet anyway and no animation, though that would come cheaper and easier to make and suitable for kids. But I'm gonna wait until I'm a great director so then ye shall all see my excellence in movie making, for I shall make Monkey Island the Movie(tm), but then again there will be lots of difficulties, such as the lisence, oh wait, I'll use LucasFilm to make the darn pic, and no Spielberg, yep. Is the urine rising into my head or what?

Anyone remember Walt the Dog being the pirate place? The God with the bone in the Phatt island jail.....
  • Metallus83 on 29 Dec, 2000, 23:29…
Whoops, this conversation looks strikingly similar to one further down the page. :-p
  • Metallus83 on 29 Dec, 2000, 23:26…
Oh yeah! That was a reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. On the ride, one of the pirates is trying to do the same thing as Guybrush had to do in MI2 to get out of jail!
  • QueZTone on 29 Dec, 2000, 22:22…
Yipes! Indeed you're right sorry. Did I write that anyway? ;) LOL hehe Okay well it was the other way around then :) Pirates of Carribean was inspired by Monke...ehmm no hehe ;P Monkey Island inspired by POC. hehe And yes there is a StarWars kind of ride in Disney Land; Star Tours is the name; and it was fun too; however I liked POC a lot more; very atmospherically! :) About Star Tours; I'm not sure if it is an official StarWars copyrighted ride; maybe just a legal copy of the StarWars idea sort of. Okay nuff talk :) Cheers all! :D
  • Jake on 30 Dec, 2000, 00:48…
Star Tours is definately an official Star Wars ride. It says something to the effect of "from the minds of disney and george lucas" beneath the title of the ride in Disneyland, Disney World, and Eurodisney/Disnetland Paris/wtf ever its called... that or I'm insane. If Star Tours or the Temple of Doom rollercoaster (both at eurodisney... or at least when I was there once) were shown in the ad they'd have to put "copyright Disney/LucasFilm" at the bottom, since LucasFilm owns the rights to star wars and indiana jones...
  • Glottis on 29 Dec, 2000, 20:22…
Isn't there a Star Wars themed ride?
  • Darnn on 29 Dec, 2000, 09:19…
And as a matter of fact, SoMI was inspired by the Pirates of the Carribean ride, according to Ron. That ride was the initial reason he wanted to make the game anyway.

QueZTone, I beleive it was somewhat the opposite. But Disney and Lucasfilm. Maybe Disney can rub off all their fine influences. such as KKK connections. Lets make Guybrush a white supremicist(mispelling). We've already had LeChuck criogenically frozen. How about they support an undemocratic military regime, just like Disney's Mickey and Co. does with the regime in Myanmar(Burma). Maybe there could be a puzzle where Guybrush has to violate the constitution unpunished as many times as he can in a day (apparantly Disney World does this some 120 times a day, mainly illegal detainment). I know I've learnt one good lesson from Walt. Exploit the poor. Why else are they there.
  • mercatfat on 29 Dec, 2000, 03:36…
That's assuming that Disney Myanmar makes the product, of course.
  • thefinalbrannigan on 30 Dec, 2000, 06:12…
Profits from Mickey and Co. are split evenly between Disney and The Burmese government. That's US $8.50 on the average T-shirt. I love you Mickey. Thus I've been inspired to steal peoples liberties in the name of Capitalism and quality family fun.
  • JavaTank on 29 Dec, 2000, 00:07…
Or what about a Disney animated Monkey Island MOVIE?! RAWK!
  • QueZTone on 28 Dec, 2000, 23:35…
Hmmm wasnt the ride in Disney Land named The Pirates of the Carribean kind of inspired by Monkey Island too? So that would make perfectly sense then...
  • Swordmaster on 29 Dec, 2000, 12:11…
It was exactly the other way around - Ron Gilbert got the inspiration for Monkey Island from that ride in Disneyland. There's even a direct reference to the ride in Monkey Island 2: Guybrush in jail, Walt the dog (now who could that refer to?) having a key in his mouth. The exact same scene appears on the ride.
  • bluetentacle on 29 Dec, 2000, 01:29…
Not in any way. But they were both inspired by real pirates. The notion that an LEC game inspired a Disney ride is pretty silly.
  • Maximar on 02 Jan, 2001, 14:26…
Why are you comments always negative?
  • TaXicab on 28 Dec, 2000, 22:43…
perhaps a Disney Monkey Island game? that would own! :)
  • TaXicab on 29 Dec, 2000, 04:25…
    oy, i meant movie :)
