Is Paul Trowe of Replay Sabotaging Other Kickstarters? 05 Jun, 2012 / 31 comments

If you're not aware, Paul Trowe of Replay Games (the company who started the Leisure Suit Larry kickstarter) sent out a message to the press that he wanted to sue Wisecrack games for using Al Lowe's name and the Leisure Suit Larry name on their kickstarter. Al Lowe reponded to the message saying that he didn't intend to sue and that he gave his permission to use his name and wishes Wisecrack Games luck on Sam Suede.

However, some posters on the Adventure Gamers forums have dug up something rather concerning. According to this post by Adventure Gamers poster supaplex, a person called "gamespygeek" has been trolling the Sierra related kickstarters. There is a profile on Myspace also under the name gamespygeek that looks like Paul Trowe. Additionally, the name on the Myspace page "Jiminy Drambuie" is friends with Paul Trowe on Facebook, and both Paul Trowe and Jiminy Drambuie are listed as living in Austin, TX.

Also, an Adventure Gamers forum user by the name of Siddhi noted some similarites between Gamespygeek's trolls and Paul Trowe's own posts.

Gamespygeek wrote on SpaceVenture kickstarter:

I don’t know who the heck this guy Chris Pope is, but I believe in Scott & Mark and their ability to make a game after all these years. I originally dropped my pledge to $1.00 because of the technical screw ups but I don’t think that’s The Two Guys’s fault…I blame that on the Chris guy…he’s leading this effort.

Paul Trowe wrote:

Ask them why they didn’t join up with the folks at Replay Games to create Sierra 2.0 and instead chose some guy they’ve never heard of, Chris Pope, to run a company they don’t own.

All of this evidence does seem like Paul Trowe, or a friend of Paul Trowe, is trying to sabotage other Sierra related kickstarters. And if that is indeed the case, it's incredibly poor sportsmanship and reflects poorly upon Replay Games.

Update: The gamespygeek myspace page has been removed. I had anticipated that might happen, so I saved an image of the page, which can be viewed here.

I also have a screenshot of all of it Paul says there (including calling the IGDA chapter head Hitler for no reason) if the Facebook thread gets removed.

How about this, taken from this thread: http://www.adventuregamers.com/forums/viewthread/172/

"On IGN there is a user “gamespygeek”, who has that account since Dec 7, 2009:

The only review that user has posted is a 10/10 review for an obscure game developed by Replay Games.

Please don't cite the exact same spacequest forum thread again to indicate trowe came clear. Rather read the thread here at mixnmojo ;) The whole sam suede debacle happened after he wrote that comment.
Anyway, there is no real proof trowe is gamespygeek, but he never explained the fishy circumstances..... Time will tell.

So Trowe had the stones to admit the trolling and apologize for it. I can somehow respect that. This article should be updated.

btw I'm monolith_pig. All I can say is if this trolling IS Paul Trowe I feel let down. He freaked out once and we forgave him - cmon we're all human right? But if this is him too then he's definitely a bad egg.

Where has Paul done that? Last time I heard (couple of days ago) he still vehemently denied everything.

If this is true, I'm withdrawing my pledge from LSL. No hesitation. Fuck anyone who behaves like that. They don't deserve my money.

Alright, time to play devil's advocate. So assume this gamespygeek character is in fact Paul Trowe, and he's really pissed Al's name was tagged onto the Sam Suede Kickstarter projected. What's the big deal? You do realize, beyond the comments left on Kickstarter, you only know what you're told through the interpretation of others, right? There could be a lot of legal issues that cannot be mentioned publicly that would change your view on this situation. That's why I think having an opinion on it is pointless and REALLY fucking stupid because you end up causing damage to the people that don't deserve it.

I feel like Paul Trowe was bad news from the beginning from reading about his involvement on the Kickstarter and his grand ideas to restart everything Sierra without even having produced one game. On top of that, I'm in Austin and have conversed with a few game developers who know the guy and I haven't heard very good things, on the flip side I haven't heard major bad things either.

Replay Games just seems to be Paul in his office while the actual Larry production will be done by adventure mob, who's art and game quality seem very iffy if not straight up mediocre. They are certainly no Daedalic.

Yes, but all the stuff in the Mixnmojo post basically pertains to the Spaceventure stuff. There's only a mention of the Sam Suede lawsuit in the first paragraph.

If he actually made his peace with Spaceventure, a month ago, then I'm not sure why he's still posting spiteful comments as recently as last week.

    @lancelazer
that confession only pertains to his smear against the spaceventure back in May, the hate against Sam suede is more recent. Therefore, nothing has been settled!

For the good of the adventure game / Kickstarter community, it should be made known here that everything seems to have settled now. Paul Trowe has admitted his mistake and everyone is a happy family again, so an update on that wouldn't go astray!

The situation looks really messed up... It's sad.

It's good that metafx grabbed that snapshot. Here's the one I took moments after reading this article. At first I faced the original pic and then it changed into this for just a few minutes before deletion:

Running a google-image search on the avatar, I found this site (among others) already using the pic: http://tinyurl.com/PTsource

This makes complete sense since in earlier news Paul Trowe was going to buy the Space Quest rights and Replay Games was going to make it. He must have been really angry when the Two Guys went on their own way. As usual his answer was to try and smear their project.

Maybe he's even involved in those 2 weeks of legal problems the Two Guys had?

This in one messed up serial adrenaline junkie, I'm glad to see this reported here.

lol, this is probably not a typical mojo topic, however the link is easily made:
Al Lowe worked for King's Quest 1, a franchise now licensed by TellTale Games, who are very Mojo appropriate thanks to their great Sam and Max and TOMI games.
Anyway, I read this whole gamespygeek thing yesterday at the forums of Adventure Gamers. I thought it was silly at most. But why is that profile now deleted on myspace? The plot thickens...

Right... The myspace account mentioned photo JUST changed! I visited once and had this Paul-Trowe-looking photo and now it sports "Jiminy Drambuie", a kid taking his own pic with a phone over a mirror... I had the page in another tab so it hadn't refreshed so I downloaded the "before" pic (which does look like PT indeed, even more after the suspicious change)...

REATIME UPDATE: Now, not even the account exists! Let's take a snapshot of that too then :)

This seems like a potentially dangerous non-Lucasarts-related thing for Mixnmojo even mention. Hope it doesn't blow up for Mojo or the Two Guys - their Kickstarter has been going pretty well lately!

Does he realize that he and al lowe used Tim Schafer's name a billion times during his own kickstarter?

Remember al's opening line, "hi, Im legendary adventure game creator tim sch--- I mean al lowe"?

Since I don't have infinite money, I chose to be a backer of the LSL remake to the detriment of Jane Jensen's and Two Guys from Andromeda's projects. Seems now I made the worst decision possible.

Holy cow! That sounds pretty awful. I hope that Trowe doesn't take them to court - could hurt Kickstarter adventure projects if people start seeing them as risky. I hope Trowe shuts up and leaves them alone - it sounds like they're making a good game.
