I spit on your grave, with reference humor! 23 Jan, 2005 / Comments: 27

Some might have seen Trunks' comment about this in an earlier news post, and we can now confirm it: one of the news tickers in a Mercenaries cut-scene reads "Omaha, NE: Cancellation of 'Sam & Max' causes prison riot; National Guard called in to quell uprising."

Mercenaries was of course announced just after the cancellation of Sam & Max: Freelance Police, much to the wrath of Mojo and its readers. Still, seems like kind of a strange thing to put in a cut-scene, seeing that LucasArts has quietly removed the press release regarding the cancellation.

Sam & Max, man

Jokes about the cancellation of Sam and Max 2 are so stupid.

If only the cancellation of Sam and Max 2 DID cause prison riots...

I think this is so cool. I love the pics. Thanks for getting them online! GO Mojo.

Another thing, what about Max in every game? Is that deal still on? =)
  • Gabez on 26 Jan, 2005, 13:06…
Probably, though the liscence runs out in May so I guess they'll have to stop then. :~

There is such a thing as fair use you know. ?
  • Gabez on 27 Jan, 2005, 12:27…
    Fair what now?
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 26 Jan, 2005, 22:24…
    Tell that to Disney!

Here's a couple other news tickers seen in the game:

    "Tipoca City: Clones cloned."

"Coruscant: Class-action lawsuit filed against space station manufacturer for faulty exhaust ports."

"Warren Commission has determined that Greedo did shoot first."

"Mysterious Egyptian artifact found after being locked away in government warehouse since 1936."
  • ThunderPeel2001 on 25 Jan, 2005, 03:36…
    Pretty cool stuff!

    LOOM SUCKS! ?

    Actually, I don't think it's a very good joke.

Even if we're not talking about it anymore, as far as I remember, nobody really 'forgave' LEC for cancelling Sam and Max. It's still as stupid and wrong as it ever was, and so... it's almost as if it's in poor taste for THEM to joke about it. They should still be quietly embarrased about the whole thing.
  • Gabez on 24 Jan, 2005, 18:04…
    Well I forgave them. ;

    I like the fact that they can joke about it like that. They're admitting that it was a stupid - or at the very least controversial - decision to make, just in a way that won't make *them* look too stupid. Sounds like classic LucasArts to me. ;

Eh, you have a point but I think it's a little too soon. I think they need to make an amazing game or two again before they earn the right to joke about past mistakes.
  • Metallus on 24 Jan, 2005, 17:14…
    Hey, relax guy.
  • Udvarnoky on 24 Jan, 2005, 16:59…
Except it was probably put in by a developer rather than by one of the management suits who were responsible for cancelling S&M.
  • InsoFox on 31 Jan, 2005, 00:04…
Well that's true, but it's still an LEC product. I'm just surprised they let it through... seeing as they probably want to distance themselves from the whole thing.
  • Metallus on 24 Jan, 2005, 01:15…
Fuck, now I have to buy this game.
  • Jake on 23 Jan, 2005, 19:03…
    Good stuff.
  • LucasTones on 23 Jan, 2005, 17:03…
    Haha, yes, I did that
  • Gabez on 23 Jan, 2005, 15:47…
    Hah that's pretty neat.
  • jimmycracker on 23 Jan, 2005, 15:37…
Ok, it's either a single developer who put that in in secret (no idea what his opinion is on the sam and max 2 matter), or the whole team decided to do that just for laughs...
Eh, I dunno. Who knows if they're mocking us or just being playful?
  • Udvarnoky on 23 Jan, 2005, 15:40…
I'm guessing it wasn't LucasArts who put that in there (though supposedly a lot of employees were as pissed as we were), so either they didn't notice or didn't care. It's really cool either way.
  • Remi O on 23 Jan, 2005, 16:53…
The cut-scenes were developed at LucasArts and not Pandemic according to the credits. I'm just surprised that nobody noticed and let it go through. :~
  • Udvarnoky on 23 Jan, 2005, 17:00…
    Really...that's interesting. I guess they didn't notice?
  • jp-30 on 23 Jan, 2005, 18:41…
Well Mike Nelson, who rubberstamped the cancellation of the game isn't at LucasArts any more. It's not too surprising that some of the few left there still have a sense of humour and are saddened about the cancellation of Sam & Max.
  • hierohero on 24 Jan, 2005, 04:40…
least we know some people who remain at lucasarts still care
  • Jake on 26 Jan, 2005, 22:54…
    Or have senses of humor.
