Hal Barwood's Memoirs 01 Mar, 2003, 09:12 / 10 comments

GameSpot has published Entry #1 for Hal Barwood's RTX Red Rock designer diary. This first entry deals with the woes of cutting parts out of the game as the production deadline looms closer. Here's a small glimpse into the process:
So, with a good cut to make, why is the process so tough? Because we're in schedule hell, with hard dates to make and not much time to make them. Each little featurette must be measured against time that could be spent honing up the frame rate, for example, on the PS2. And cuts can backfire.
PS2, eh? *sniff* In addition, the feature allegedly contains 37 new screenshots. Note for you Windows users: the screenshots will not appear if you've been monkeying around with your "hosts" file. Enjoy!

Man, it's like a Linopolis in here.

Linopolis has fallen! Long shall her legend live.

That alien critter idea was nice to read about, but I was hoping for a bit more.

Well, you won't see me buying the game. Sure, one reason is because I don't have a PS2, and it will be a cold day in hell (which can be shown to be ever heating up in a humorous chem final answer by a smart ass) before I get a Playstation x.

Sony's games division is strictly off limits to me. Doesn't matter if they had nothing to do with RTX going PS-only, Sony has screwed with enough cross platform deals that they totally piss me off, and I will have nothing to do with it.

Although it sounds like it is just a stupid decision to listen to retarded annalists, I mean we all know that the X-Box totally failed by last summer.

I'm with you on having looked forward to RTX, Andrew... it's a damn shame.

I don't think RTX moving to near-exclusive-PS2 had anything to do with Sony mucking with the deal. I think RTX Gamecube's "indefinite-postponement" is due to the "industry trend" of "getting the fuck away from the cube as fast as you possibly can," as started by Sega Sports and followed a bit by EA. I guess Gamecube's lackluster Christmas performance has scared a few game developers.

Right, which is a circular thing, Christmas is a bit slow for the one console that has the least amount of games, one company decides they can get more money just going with PS2 as people will buy anything they throw at the PS2, then the analysts say that they are going to fail, another company bails...

Well, the ball is certainly in Nintendo's court. Hopefully they can start to handle themselves better. If you were a mom buying a console for your 12 year old this last Christmas, would you buy the $200 system that comes with 2 games, or the $150 system that comes with zero games and cant play DVDs? It is nice that Nintendo has started the "get a free game with the system" deal to "compete" with the XBox plan, but I don't think its enough to make the GC look appealing enough next to an XBox, or the GTA Machine.
