Great moments in Mojo-related games writing #01 27 Dec, 2009 / Comments: 5

From Destructoid:
As walkthroughs prove to be more and more in-depth, programmers (or at least, ones who care) are pressed to hide secrets in more convoluted ways, or in greater numbers. For instance, look at how ridiculously placed some of Brutal Legend's Bound Serpents were placed.

The bound serpents reminded me a lot of the 100 Gold Skulltula hunt from Ocarina of Time in both the ways I liked and disliked it. I enjoyed the inordinate amount of things to find in every nook and cranny of the game world, with the intention clearly being to encourage exploration. That said, someone wanting to get 100% shouldn't have to resort to a strategy guide to find them all. It's one thing for it to be merely tedious (after all, collecting everything is inherently something only for the hardcore), but even if you're actively looking for them it's highly possible to never track them all down within the confines of a reasonable amount of patience and perseverence on the gamer's part. I think the GPS thingie that is apparently included in the latest patch is an appropriate correction. Some might call it a form of cheating, but I think it's fair enough if the player can only get it after a certain amount of progress is made in the game. It's not like it doesn't still require a lot of determination on the player's part.

This post is a perfect example of something that doesn't belong on Behind Mojo, by the way.

I don't know, it's an odd and funny little quip that wouldn't work anywhere else; consider how ridiculously misplaced this post could have been misplaced.

Also, you can't "unlock" the GPS until only after beating the game once. Yeah...

I used a the updated Prima Strategy Guide map on those bound serpents, colored all of the dots in as I found them, and I'm still without 2 of them. "Pissed" is understated for my feelings.
