George Lucas dreams of Talking Games 08 Aug, 2005, 10:31 / 6 comments

In his recent siggraph keynote address, George Lucas mentioned the direction he wants his computer games division to move in.
"I want to get to a point where you can talk to the game and it will talk back." According to Lucas, a system with artificial intelligence is the "ultimate goal" of those working in the gaming industry.

"I'm really pushing for advances in artificial intelligence and intelligent voice-recognition technology," he added in front of the crowd of thousands.

Lucas believes such technology would allow gamers to be the stars of games that are even more like movies than the current crop of video games: "I think that will change games from first-person shooter narratives to intelligent and challenging first-person shooter-type dramas."
Games that are even more like movies than the current crop of video games? Joy. And speech recognition in games! Revolutionary.

LifeLine is nothing like he was talking about. He's talking about being able to interact with characters through talking. Imagine running down a corridor in Half-Life, coming across a scientist and being able to TALK to him/her, and they understand and respond, as opposed to pressing USE and hearing a pre-scripted speech.

Videogames aren't really where all the cutting edge voice recognition/generation work is going on...

Forget about Lucas. Clearly he is set in messing all he and associated have created in young age.
    Senility is very sad.
I too agreed that he does not have any idea of the impact LucasArts had in the gamming scene years ago.

    I can't wait for Ibsen's manhunter Nora.
Nice to know that Lucas knows his game-genres... (it could be an interesting idea for an adventure though, if only lucasarts made those archaic things...)

I wonder if George has seen or played Facade?

Haha I love the dripping sarcasm in that post... but I wonder if this'll mean that George will give LucasArts some extra funding to pursue his crazy ideas...
