First look at Indiana Jones game coming later this month 09 Jan, 2024 / 7 comments

It was an impressive trick on the part of the upcoming Indy game, getting itself announced prior to the fifth movie going before cameras and managing to stay a committed no-show all the way up to the present, on the other side of Dial of Destiny’s home video release.

But that is scheduled to change later this month, as Eurogamer reports:

Wolfenstein developer MachineGames will showcase more than "more than 10 minutes of game and developer insights" including the first gameplay trailer. Expect to hear details about when the game will be set, what its story will be about, and "how fans will actually play as Indy". (Using a video game controller? An actual whip?! The mind boggles.)

Bethesda announced it had an Indiana Jones game in the works all the way back in January 2021, and warned at the time that it would be some time before the project was given a full reveal. Now, that time is finally here. In the meantime, we did at least get confirmation via an FTC hearing that it'll be releasing exclusively on Xbox and PC.

It’s all part of the Xbox Developer Direct showcase, which “will be broadcast on 18th January at 8pm UK time - that's 3pm Eastern or midday Pacific.” We’ll be here to point you to that stream when the time comes. I mean, probably.

I'll decide for myself on whether to write internet comments, but appreciate the "don't bother" -- thanks for letting me think for myself.

One article does not "comment sentiment" make, especially one that has several factual inaccuracies in it (including in the intro), but you're clearly smart enough to know what they are, so I'll spare you explaining them.

Awfully presumptuous of you to decide I'm not an Arab that likes Raiders and the rest of the franchise, isn't it?

But please, do go on to wish ill on a video game that hasn't even been released and you know zero details about beyond your baked-in beliefs about Indiana Jones. What if the game upends your expecations? What if it addresses some of your criticisms? You don't know or care, you've made your mind up in advance based on the past, and that's your right.

But that's a rather lack of empathy and understanding for dozens of people relying on that project to pay their mortgages and feed their families. Please, presume away -- I won't snark at you to not bother.

Also: I'm not interested in continuing this conversation, especially considering the current political climate, so don't bother. I put those points for third parties.

I'm not going to audition for your understanding or empathy on my apathy towards a movie, nor my disinterest in the colonial chest-thumping that created its framework.

Frantz Fanon and Edward Said should be obligatory school reading at this point, though, I swear.

Please do elaborate on the "associated orientalism" inherent in the *entire* series, not just one movie, to justify your "deep loathing" of the Nazi-punching character. Did Indy ending up in Ancient Rome at the end of Dial of Destiny show some Romanism? Did he appropriate Archimedes? Was the Grail Knight in Last Crusade mocking Christianity?

No. That's daft, even by the standards given to someone who doesn't think in terms of systems or historiography.

Punching Nazis is fun. Europeans and Americans making off with artefacts from a violent Arabia isn't. And I could go into Joseph Massad and Edward Said scholarship on the grand pulpy traditions Indiana Jones is part of, but you obviously need to read Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism first, so why bother. Still:

    (1) This is a common sentiment, which is why outlets like The New Arab talk about it that way. For example: "Can Indiana Jones overcome its Orientalist past?"

    (2) Criticism of colonial adventuring is common in academia. For example: Imaging Terra Incognita: The Disciplinary Gaze of Empire.

    (3) Alternatively: Get through Raiders with an Arab, especially an Egyptian, without clenching, I dare you.

    Temple is somehow worse.

Agreed that punching Nazis is fun, though.

Looks like the title may have leaked

Raiders of the Lost Ark. Temple of Doom. The great circle. It doesn't have the same ring, eh?

(But I have a deep loathing for Indiana Jones/the associated orientalism, so a potential flop is good by me.)

Aw aren't you beautifully with it! Here's your online round of applause!

I don't ask this rhetorically, I'd appreciate actual answers to help me and millions other know where the artificial line begins and ends.

The Great Circle, however, is a lame title.

It's incredible to me that we got a new Monkey Island game sooner than a new Indiana Jones...what?!

Keen to see it, hopefully it'll be good
