First Penny Arcade scores trickle-in 02 May, 2008 / Comments: 8

As Penny Arcade's Gabe is reporting, the first Penny Arcade reviews are cropping-up and they're really polarised. Apparently one reviewer gave the game a 4/10 in Edge and 68% in some other magazine, but OXM gave the game a great 85%. Also, according to Gabe the game should be out later sometime this month.

Does this mean games are changing, or does it mean that this game is a love-or-hate thing? Or did Gabe and Tycho accurately predict the future? Let's buy the game and find-out later this summer.

    He gives links to the sites but not the reviews themselves - which aren't on there.

    And I think it's unfair for him to say "this is a good example of how people either love or hate Penny Arcade" when they're commenting about the game rather than the comic. Completely different thing.

    And yes, some people will like it, some won't, but that's nothing to do with people's views on the comic - that's just life.

    I agree with Gabe and Kroms as well. While the game may lose some existing PA fans based on its gameplay mechanics or choice of setting (or just general disapproval of the games execution/quality), I think the chief deciding factor for the large majority of people is going to be "do you think Penny Arcade is funny?" And in that regard, appreciation or disdain for the game and comic will be drawn along nearly identical lines.

    I think that's an easy excuse if the game's not very good...

    ... but I want to read these elusive reviews before I make any more judgements.

    I agree with nearly everything you said. I don't think they will lose fans of the COMIC because of the game; the comic will still have its fans if it delivers the same quality of humour. But not everyone will enjoy the game, I think.

    Are you saying not all fans of Penny Arcade the Comic will enjoy Penny Arcade the Game? Because that's exactly my point.

    Sorry about my wording, it was like 2 am. Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. And that the game won't win over new fans, but I actually predict it will be good, just not to everyone's taste.

    I agree, but then once again that was exactly my point! It's irrelevant whether people like PA or not - I'm sure there will be plenty of major fans of PA who hate the game. It all comes down to taste, and whether the game is actually good or not.

    Again, I'll comment more when I can see the reviews. If they say 'it's not funny' then I'll agree with Gabe, it's obviously a review by someone who doesn't like the comic. If they say 'it's very funny, but the gameplay is repetitive, it's hard to control, and it's not very enjoyable despite the humour' then I'll know where I stand.

    I agree with him completely, actually. They've been saying it since the beginning: the game is for people who all ready love Penny Arcade. If you don't like the comic, you will not like the game. I really don't expect Tycho's writing to win over people NOW.
