Farewell EB/GAME 24 Feb, 2001, 18:11 / 10 comments

*****THIS MESSAGE IS FOR BRITISH PEEPS ONLY*****

Last summer Electronics Boutique bought out GAME and are only now deciding to shut shops, as there are shops of GAME and EB almost a stones throw away from each other.

I recieved a letter for Electronics Boutique Headquarters explaining that they have shut various stores and are urging you to go to GAME for all PC and console games

both stores have been owned by the same chain for a number of yeaes now, and both have exactly the same reward/discount schemes... as for people whit only an EB in their town, they will probably see it turning into a GAME any time now...

We have TWO EB's in our town, one at the bottom of Debenhams, and a shop called FORMAT. Hope they keep one of the EB's open since the nearest game is in the next city.

how often do any of you actually pay for a game? besides monkey island :)

When they actually made games that ran on my computer, I used to get a new game about every month. Of these, 100.00% were paid for. And of course you'll all say: "Wot a f00l!! Haven't u herd of cd burners!!!" Personally software piracy seems just like walking into a shop and running off with the game (seeing as the cost of manufacture is negligable compared to the cost of production), and if the game's not good enough to pay for (a common argument), what do you want it for?

Yeah! Where I live you can't buy games! You have to travel all the way to the next town to get one!

Anyway, how could this have been allowed? They are the only two high-street Game retailers around in most towns, at least in mine (York). There is almost no competition left. That does not sound like a healthy market to me! I know in Stockholm there are dozens and dozens of small retaliers, and no large cahins, resulting in lower pricing.

So they're keeping GAME and shutting the EB stores? I'm asking because Game offers (a) a decent reward card scheme and (b) 10% student discount, both of which I use. It's no problem in terms of travelling distance, they're practically neighbours, but still...
