Fans Present Maniac Mansion Remake 22 May, 2004 / Comments: 12

Over at the AGS website, an AGS gamemaker, "LucasFan Games," has put up a really nice 256 color remake of Maniac Mansion. The game doesn't offer a new visual style or anything - it still has the full spirit of the original 16 (and 8?) color versions, just slightly more colorful and with a less annoying interface. If you haven't played Maniac Mansion because you were put off by its archaic interface or dated colors, now's your chance to put things right. Thanks to skullkid in the forums for the tip.

Update: For more about the team behind this remake, check here. You might spot a couple Mojo readers of yore in there.

I download this game about several months ago & I only played a little bit of it but I really enjoyed this remake. LucasFan Games captured the look, feel & spirit of Maniac Mansion.

LucasFan Games also made a game based off of Jak McKraken which is also avaliable for download at their homepage.

Hm, I don't think I liked when I played it in DOTT... the fact that you could die ruined the fun.

I didn't know you could die in Maniac Mansion.

There are still ways to die in the remake, but there aren't as many.

And in the remake, when a character dies, his/her inventory is still usable; in the original, the items were lost forever.

In the configuration there's a "use speech pack if available" option. Where would one find this speech pack?

Is it an unofficial AGS add-on? Or...

I'm hoping it's an official LucasArts pack found in, say, the Day of The Tentacle version of Maniac Mansion, but don't have it installed right now to check.

    Anyone?

Ahh. On further inspection, I assume that it's a stanadrd AGS configuration box, and refers to a pack that likely doesn't exist.

If your characters talk to each other, they sometimes give you clues about how to proceed.

Also, a lot of the "Look at" responses had to be written from scratch, as there is no "Look at" verb in the original Maniac Mansion.

Just even more examples of how awesome this remake is.

OH THANK YOU SO MUCH !
I had given up Maniac Mansion almost 12 years ago because i was stuck in the beginning.
No is my chance to finish it.

    Whoa. This is amazing!

It almost feels like an actual LucasArts game that has lain undiscovered for years.

    Great job!

Cool. I've had it "in DOTT" forever, but never bothered to play it. All that's about to change. :D
