E3 things and stuff 17 May, 2001, 23:47 / 24 comments

Events are drawing to a close here on the first day of the E3 Expo. We've seen some great things, all of which I'll be updating the site with as soon as possible. We've met Dominic Armato and Bill Tiller, who have both been great fun. But the most interesting piece of news was when, during a chance meeting with Simon Jeffery he left us with this quote:
I'm sorry about the whole Star Wars thing, next year there will be loads of original titles.
Okay, so it wasn't that exact quote, but it was pretty near, he then said "ENNNGGHHHH!!" and destroyed downtown Los Angeles.

I'll be interviewing him tomorrow at some point, and we'll post it sometime on Sunday. So stay tuned for Star Wars, Star Wars, aaaand also some Star Wars (and Smash Bros Melee!) ... whoop!

Most of you seem to have made up your minds, but i think i'll wait another year. If we don't have some decent non-Star Wars next year, then i will conclude that Simon is Bullshitting us. If we get some decent games then he'll gain my trust and some of my ???.

omfg. the warcraft 3 trailer is incredible. you really missed it. I heard it's downloadable but to see it on a huge screen with LOUD speakers was really dramatic and coool. anyway yeah. I was impressed with it.

I said it last year, I said it this year and i'll say it next year... Keep the faith.

Excellent :) If I've been following this company for this many years, I'm not gonna quit now because of some games that bore me (they're pretty good, actually... Star Wars just isn't my bag).

MMMMMH... I think that this Star Wars interruption is only a way to oppose the Star Trek's games succes in the last year, but JK2 sounds good, and this will probably calm the wave of Star Wars games in 2002 connected with Ep II. After these enlightening reflections I'm agree with you: Simon is surely a good boy.

Simon is a really nice guy. I'm sure that he was truthful in his statement.
  • invisibelle on 18 May, 2001, 18:29…
You guys can suck it. (Except Joonas) ... Simon is a really cool guy... I admit, I had my doubts, but he seems genuinely apologetic about the Star Wars problem. I believe that he/LEC will deliver... I'm sure he knows that if he doesn't, he'll be losing some of his most dedicated fans.

For crying out loud, Simon has just barely had time to hang his plants into his new office and you're already demanding him to make drastic changes into the company's development strategy? Simon has been more pro-adventure than the previous president in the whole of his career!

I'm happy with that quote (or paraphrasing). It loosely dictates a significant quantity and a concrete date (E3 2002). If next year we see You Don't Know Jack: Star Wars, Starfighter for Gamecube, and a fourth painfully incompetent attempt at an RTS, *then* we would have cause to revolt. Still, I basically have no plans to purchase a LucasArts game in 2001.
  • Chunkey Monkey on 18 May, 2001, 02:29…
LIES ALL LIES!! He's just BSing us AGAIN!
  • tabacco on 18 May, 2001, 19:56…
And on what do you base that statement? How do you know, exactly?
  • Chunkey Monkey on 20 May, 2001, 12:03…
    It's a joke fool.
  • Trinity on 18 May, 2001, 00:33…
First you complain they make Star Wars at all, now you complain when he says they'll make original titles. Make up your mind.
  • Strife on 18 May, 2001, 00:06…
"I'm sorry about the whole Star Wars thing, next year there will be loads of original titles." Oh, your word means sooo much to me. You *must* be sorry at the thought of cashing in on your only major franchise at the gamers' expense.
  • tabacco on 18 May, 2001, 19:56…
    Oh, grow up
  • Strife on 18 May, 2001, 21:33…
You can choose to go by emotions, but I prefer to look at the facts. There isn't a single thing immature with either view, so I would appreciate it if the pretentious insults would cease.
  • Jake on 18 May, 2001, 18:27…
That comment from Simon was one of the most sincere sounding things I've heard this entire show. Lay off, please :)
  • Strife on 18 May, 2001, 21:36…
I profusely apologize for making public an opinion of the minority. I sincerely promise it will not happen again.
