Dalnet BT suck 11 Feb, 2001 / Comments: 17

Ok, I'm back from sunny Rome. That place rocks. and some news that will affect regulars at #Monkey-Island chat channel on IRC DALnet. They have apparently banned BTinternet users from the DALnet service.
This hasnt yet affected BT ADSL users, but no one else is able to chat with other #mi goers. As usual when things lke this occur, a petition is created. To have your say head on over to the Forums

'blanket' bans are used out of laziness. is there a lazy.dal.net? mind you i think dalnet and bt offer equally poor service :)
  • Huz on 11 Feb, 2001, 18:15…
No, blanket bans are used because they work. BT Internet uses dynamic IP allocation. You can ban host1385.btinternet.com, but without the cooperation of BT Internet to terminate this user's account, the user can just log on again and get a new hostname, hence evading the ban. As with a lot of things, a minority has spoiled it for everyone else - and this wouldn't have happened if BT had got off their backsides and done something before it reached this stage.

sure they work, for lazy people

Please tell us your solution. I'll pass it on to DALnet and volunteer you to implement it.

dalnet unkline bt or we raise the temperature of their servers 1 million degrees a day.... for 5 days.

Thankfully, us BTInternet users can access some servers. It does take time to see which though

It's probably their both to blame, I've had major problems with BT in the past about the whole Freeserve with BT surftime deal. BT like to blame the opposite party but, DALnet really has gone downhill lately.

I agree completely that DALnet sucks, lately the servers have been terrible and the whole BT thing really annoys me. They need to get off of their arses and do something about it!
  • Huz on 11 Feb, 2001, 17:20…
DALnet /have/ "got off their arses" and done something about it. They placed the ban as a last resort. It's unfair to blame them for what's happened. If BT's abuse team just ignored them (as DALnet say), then they didn't have a lot of other choice. The ball's in BT's court now - they're the ones who need to start "doing something about it".
  • PTDC on 11 Feb, 2001, 20:02…
do you have something against bt?
  • Huz on 11 Feb, 2001, 21:48…
I've really never had any reason to complain about them before (apart from the whole "let's see how long we can get away with charging for local calls" thing), and this affair doesn't do much for them in my eyes. The "DALnet suck" attitude annoys me, which is why I'm behaving like quite the DALnet zealot. They don't suck, they're just doing what they can to protect their users from abuse on IRC. The abusers happen to use BT Internet, and BT Internet are apparently unwilling to do anything about it. As far as I can see, DALnet have acted more responsibly than BT Internet in this matter. To answer your question: I currently have more against BT Internet than I do against DALnet. If BT Internet sort this out (and don't let it happen again) then we'll be best of friends again. ;)
