Craig Derrick would like to get your hopes up about a Monkey Island show 30 Dec, 2020 / 7 comments

May it weigh heavy on his conscience!

You should read the whole thread, which includes this reply to an inquiry about a CMI remaster:

COMI remaster is tricky. I looked into it years ago (as some have mentioned before) but I was always more interested in what we could do with Maniac Mansion first. Haven’t given up that idea quite yet.

I know Craig doesn't mean to be cruel, but tell it to the lacerations on my beleaguered heart.

Also, Maniac Mansion got the remake treatment by LucasFans with their Maniac Mansion Deluxe (and then shut-down). But that edition was damn good. Sure, it could have been made over with Dott graphics, and there may have been some German-team attempt being made to do something similar, but I think MMDeluxe is all that is needed there.

    Bring on the CMI remaster.

OF course the only issue with that is that I know that Ron Gilbert wasn't overly keen on the direction which Day of the Tentacle took the series in (turning it into a cartoon, as opposed to a homage to 80's slasher movies), so I'd also be happy enough with Gilbert overseeing a remake of the first game which stays true to the original intent.

What's your source on this? It has long been my understanding that both Ron and Gary were supportive and pleased with the new direction that Tim and Dave took DOTT in. Winnick for sure is on record about it -- is there a quote from Ron somewhere?

It was from an interview with Ron Gilbert, either on a YouTube video or podcast. Sorry that I can't be more specific but it was a while back. Just to be clear, from my memory; it's not as though Gilbert was angrily saying that he hated the direction they took the sequel in but rather that he wasn't overly keen on it and that it's not what he would have done, as he didn't feel that it was true to the style, intent and world of the first game.

I had a dream this morning that I met Jon Favreau at a party and talked him up on making a Monkey Island show. Then time fast-forward to a meeting bringing in Ron Gilbert to ask to be apart of the treatment stage of the show. Then some ideation on a reveal teaser trailer. Then I woke up.

So, I guess a Monkey Island as a TV show is in the air today.

    "COMI remaster is tricky."

I wonder why that would be the case?

As for a Maniac Mansion remake. I'd love to see that, particularly if it was a complete re-imagining done in the style of Day of the Tentacle. The thing about Day of the Tentacle is that it retconned Maniac Mansion as an in-universe videogame based upon the true events surrounding the Edisons, Bernard & co and the meteor (similar to how the Maniac Mansion show exists in-universe within Day of the Tentacle).

Therefore, I've always thought that there's room to make a remake of the first game, in the style of Day of the Tentacle, which shows us what really happened and at the same time, one which wouldn't erase the original game from existence (but instead reinforce that it was a videogame based on true events).

Just to surprise you all, I'm actually the guy who posted the original tweet on the random Monkey Island show that was on TV last night here in the UK

I wasn't expecting all the responses especially from Craig which I thought was pretty cool, lets hope one day it becomes a reality
