Captain Mystery vs. Fan Fiction 25 Apr, 2002, 16:46 / 11 comments

The SCUMM Bar's outspoken columnist, Captain Mystery, has returned with a new article titled Stories Guaranteed To Give You A Headache - Why Your Fan Fiction Ain?t Good.

As the title implies, Captain Mystery has gone and read lots of LucasArts-themed fanfic, and didn't like it so much. Fanfic writers, haters, and bored readers should all read it and write him back.

I wrote a great fanfic once. I'll upload it tonight.

He mentioned LucasArts games, but only touched on the Monkey Island series. Sure it's on a Monkey Island site, but why only delve into Monkey Island when LucasArts as a whole is mentioned? I have read some really fantastic fanfics for Grim Fandango and The Dig. He needs to do more research. Fanfics definately aren't "all bad".

Well, I'm sure he could have mentioned other LEC games, but I think some of the reasoning behind the article was the PC Gamer story which singled MI fan fic out as fairly horrible.

I agree with you, but remember that you've just only read the captain's own opinion. It's not a FACT that all fanfic is bad.

What a grouchy article. Fan fiction writers don't owe Captain Mystery anything. I bet he hasn't read/played Devil's Triangle.

His goal (according to the header image above his two articles) is to annoy/shock the #m-i community. Therefore I take his articles with a grain of salt.

Now, "annoy" and "shock" are two different things. Besides, I was the one who made the header image, not Captain Mystery.

    So he's a troll with a column.

It's not trolling, the way I see it. It's expressing a side of an argument that's sorely lacking in representation. The LEC community is very one-sided and I think it's high-time someone challenged the established norms.

As Calvin (the comic-strip character, not the theologian) once said, there's a difference between provoking a reaction and saying something sigfinicant.

I'm still pretty sure he just made up most of his opinions to piss us off. Saying "it all sucks, no exceptions" is either a wildly exaggerated opinion or one of someone we really don't want hanging around.
