Captain Mystery vs. Console-Complainers 27 Jun, 2002, 11:35 / 40 comments

Everyone's favorite mysterious column writer is back in his new article, Just Because You Can't Play, Doesn't Make It Bad - Why Console Only Ain?t Worth Complaining About. In this article, el capit?n takes his right hand and promptly slaps in the face those who complain about LEC possibly releasing games exclusively for the console. (Hey even I'm guilty of this one.) ;) Here's a clip:
That's a quote following the now-defunct rumors about Full Throttle II being made only for consoles, with no PC version in the planning. You know something? That's not bad news.
It's an interesting read so make sure to head over to The SCUMM Bar and read it.

Hurray! We all jus' love to rant!

And as for those of you that demand that console games be ported to PC, f**k you. Gaming is a privilege, not a right. Go bitch about something that's actually important.

    wops. I'm sorry. =P

Why has this turned into an argument over whether computers are better than consoles? I thought it was about the right to express dislike over some of LucasArts' decisions.
So they're releasing a few console-only games. There are some people who wish there were PC versions planned of these games. They don't want to have to buy a console system when there's only really one game on it that they're interested in. There haven't really been that many people who have gotten very angry over this.
Since Captain Mystery's article is probably longer than all the anti-console outcries he's complaing about combined, it seems an awful lot like he's running out of subjects. What controversial opinion is he going to pull out of his ass next? I think we'll soon be seeing a Captain Mystery article complaining about Mojo's purple color scheme.
  • DJG on 28 Jun, 2002, 12:33…
There's nothing wrong with Mojo's purple color scheme. Move along. ? ?
  • twifkak on 29 Jun, 2002, 19:26…
I hate Mojo's purple color scheme. It's going to delay the release of Full Throttle 2 and Psychonauts. I heard they're going to change the mojo webpage to be exclusive for the Macintosh. I say we boycott!

who is that silly scribbler and why would he write such a bizzare tirade?
  • deadworm222 on 28 Jun, 2002, 00:40…
Read his, ehem, article ? No thank you. He's probably trying to make a better world (so it seems to me, otherwise there would be no point in his rant.. articles), but I've always found out that you can do more good with a soft word and a smile.
  • Haggis on 28 Jun, 2002, 02:40…
    Brilliantly spoken.

    ok, just kidding.
  • Remi O on 27 Jun, 2002, 14:03…
At least you're not using a Mac! Oh those losers, ho ho ho... Oh... Sorry Jake.
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 08:45…
    Remi O:

First you say, "If you don't like consoles, fine, but there's no reason to slagging people who don't agree with you.".

Which is a well thought out statment which I completely agree with.

Then you go and blow your credability by "slagging off" on people who use a Mac.

Way to go Remi O! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Hypocrite!
  • Sopabuena on 28 Jun, 2002, 08:57…
    Remi000 was clearly joking
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 10:53…
No, it is not clear that he was joking.
  • Remi O on 28 Jun, 2002, 10:57…
Right, it's completely normal to use "ho ho ho" in a serious argument...
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:15…
I have seen and heard condesending type laughs used many times to provoke the other debater so, yes.
  • mercatfat on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:21…
Does that mean you find Santa threatening?
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:35…
No. How can someone feel threatened by a person that doesn't even exist?
  • mercatfat on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:53…
    You missed the point.
  • Squinky on 29 Jun, 2002, 21:15…
    Dumbass.
  • Remi O on 28 Jun, 2002, 09:01…
Heh, yeah, you have to pretty silly not to understand that, especially since I have an iMac right here next to me.
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 10:59…
Well, as you can tell I didn't find your so called joke funny.
  • mercatfat on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:11…
Perhaps a Carrot Top movie is more your style, then?
  • Lord Savage on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:18…
I have never heard of this type of movie so, I couldn't tell you if it was my style.
  • Remi O on 28 Jun, 2002, 11:14…
Ooooh, "Chairman of the Board". Ahem. I'm ashamed of knowing that.
  • mercatfat on 27 Jun, 2002, 13:11…
I just wish people would stop pretending consoles are so horrible despite the fact that they all have some damn incredible games that the PC simply cannot offer. Also, I can pick up any console title from the shelf, put it in, and play. No bugs, no hardware incompatibility problems, no ram issues, nothing. Take GTA3 for example. The PC version has (perhaps had, by now) some serious problems with it's release with game-crashing bugs, graphic card problems, etc. On the other, the PS2 version had no such problems. Now, you could argue "Oh, but look at all the extra stuff the PC version has!". Not really. They didn't add anything to increase the length of the game, just gave you a couple game-editors and the ability to use MP3s, really.

Then again, I suppose if the only newer games you enjoy are first person shooters, strategy games, MMORPGs or RPGs that are way too goddamn long, then PCs are wonderful. I, on the other hand, enjoy games that only a console can truly offer, such as Smash Bros, Resident Evil (yes, it was on PC too, but they weren't that great of ports), any Capcom game that involves fighting or shooting, any high-profile Konami title, just about every Sega title ever made whether it be Virtua Fighter, Shenmue, whatever, almost any game by Square, etc. My list could go on for days.

Yes, I realize through the wonders of emulation, I can play many Capcom titles that involve fighting or shooting. I also realize that I can't just take it over to a friend's house and play. Also, modern console ports of those titles now are packed with new characters, features, modes, etc. Back in the day, PCs were wonderful, as they had the best graphics, best games, etc. In today's world, PCs are still wonderful, but they no longer have any real advantages gaming-wise over consoles besides the internet, and even that's not going to last much longer. The wonderful Dreamcast had a 56k with it that was used for both browsing and online gaming (eventually), the XBOX has the built in broadband that you can already use to play games online, albeit not on the scale it will be in a few months, the PS2 can be used for games already if you have a USB modem, and soon they'll have full-blown internet support ready.

I used to be able to pick up any PC game off the shelf, install it, and not have to worry about my hardware one bit, because I had a VGA card, a Sound Blaster, etc. These days, in order to play most PC games the day they hit the shelf, you seem to have to have the latest pentium chip, the best 3d card and another 256mb of ram.. and that's about every 8-12 months, a lot shorter timespan than the usually 3-4 year lifespan of consoles.

Hey! You forgot the most important thing: Improved graphics! GTA3 for the console only offers 16 bit textures, the PC version has 32 bit textures!

(Oh, and they improved the controls too, there's nothing like aiming with the mouse!)
  • mercatfat on 30 Jun, 2002, 19:17…
    Graphics mean nothing to me.

The mouse aim could be a nice addition though.
  • QueZTone on 27 Jun, 2002, 15:13…
console users are not worthy of internet usage..
  • mercatfat on 27 Jun, 2002, 15:58…
    Elaborate.
  • QueZTone on 28 Jun, 2002, 04:35…
Well you're so fixed on consoles and happy that they run games perfectly. The thing is, BECAUSE pcs do more than just run games they don't always run problemless. PCs have more than just games, for example the internet. Once consoles expand their functions as introduce internet and maybe office applications you will see that problems with consoles will arrise too. (Because not all problems are hardware related)
  • mercatfat on 28 Jun, 2002, 10:34…
I don't really want to answer that, because your logic is seriously messed up.

Consoles are made for gaming. Period. That's why I own a PC for my apps, internet, and in a very rare case, gaming.

Consoles will always be for gaming and wonderful for it. Period. Just buy a goddamn console. No one says you can't have a PC too.
  • Scummbuddy on 28 Jun, 2002, 10:56…
    i agree with mercatfat
  • Remi O on 27 Jun, 2002, 15:18…
See, this is a totally pointless statement, which is what the article largely is about. If you don't like consoles, fine, but there's no reason to slagging people who don't agree with you.
  • twifkak on 27 Jun, 2002, 19:56…
I'd say the fatcat is the more short-sighted. Doesn't seem to know the difference between software and hardware.
  • mercatfat on 27 Jun, 2002, 20:16…
What are you talking about? Read a little more carefully.
  • twifkak on 28 Jun, 2002, 12:17…
I just re-read your post. Sounds the same as it did the first time.
