Absurd Monkey Island speculation originates from ambiguous Facebook remark, we spread it 19 Apr, 2011 / 7 comments

Something Craig Derrick, Monkey Island Special Edition producer and self-proclaimed adventure genre re-inventor, wrote on the wall of the official Monkey Island Facebook profile on April 7th has captured the attention of TalesOfMI.net and others. It went a little something like:

So...how's it going? =) Thanks to everyone here for keeping the love for Monkey Island going! Great things come to those that wait.

What could he be referring to? Does he simply speak retrospectively of the Monkey Island special editions in an unintentionally cryptic way, or is he teasing something for the future? We circulate this with the irresponsible desire to see you invest emotionally in the assumption of the latter. What the hell else to you think this site is for? Promoting LSD?

Not so much grasping at straws as grasping at the idea there may be straws to grasp anyway.

LA haven't made 25 games. Oh right... Star Wars. Make that 250.

Well 14 of them will be the adventure titles and the other 11 will be a mix of the Star Wars games from the mid to late 90's and others such as Outlaws and Afterlife.

Yeah, I'm hoping that they're releasing the two existing SEs in some kind of boxed retail form. They're definitely up to something with the Monkey Island license, anyway, however big or small it turns out to be.

I think it's a bit too early for a new Monkey Island game. I know Tales and the special editions did really well, but adventure games are still pretty expensive to make, and still not the most popular games in the world. I can't see Lucasarts making a new one with two Monkey games waiting for a rerelease, especially with all the employees they let go recently. Maybe if another company is doing it, but even if Telltale suddenly seems able to make a million games a week, I can't really see it happening.

My guess: If it means anything at all, it'll probably be the GOG-thing or rereleases (maybe not even remakes) of Curse and/or Escape. I just can't see a completely new Monkey happening right now.

Or, to be slightly less pessimistic and a bit more mojotastic: it means the secret Ron Gilbert/Tim Schafer Double Fine-game is Monkey Island 3b, in full 2D HD animation, explaining the secret in 7 languages and featuring Jeff Goldblum as Guybrush's (and Chuckie's??) father. Believe.

I suspect either a whole new, yes new MI game from LucasArts themselves or their teasing a special edition for another game. I can't see it been CMI cause Bill Tiller asked them last year and they said they weren't interested.

Either that or it could be related to the GOG conference from last week which could mean LA maybe the ones to release 25 games this summer
