A Look at Return to Monkey Island, Seven-Ish Months Later 07 Apr, 2023 / 4 comments

Sure, the announcement anniversary just passed, and the seven-month anniversary of its release is two weeks away. So, consider this either a dessert or an amuse bouche: “Remi Returns to Return to Monkey Island,” a look back at the game now that the new-car smell has worn off.

And, there isn’t much more to say about it. Maybe you’ll agree, maybe you won’t. Either way: read it! You know you want to!

There will be an OST? Has that been confirmed?

Yes, or, sort of — there’s a soundtrack CD part of the LRG package so I don’t know if they’ll do that as a standalone release. I’d love it if they did something like with Psychonauts 2, which has seen a three-volume release.

McConnell gave an interview about the soundtrack with a Norwegian outlet that contacted him about Per Spelmann. I’ll see if I can re-track down the link.

    Thanks, I've found it:

And with the forthcoming OST I hope there’ll be some more details about the production.

Obviously I've already downloaded and enjoyed the BillyCheers versions, but I'd still look forward to an official version to. See what they select, how they mix the medleys. And even if there'd be nothing different, I'd buy it anyway to support the idea of releasing OSTs!

I find it very interesting that you indicate that Land has written the Mêlée mix and McConnell the Brr Muda mix. From where did you get this information. Is there any article or interview with the composers that I have missed?

Great article! I do agree with almost everything you've written. Isn't that weird? ;-)

Concerning the graphics, I'd still like to add, that even it they "don’t try to woo you in with dramatic zooms", I loved all the little zooms they included during dialogues. Or for example the big zoom out that happens when you first climb out of your cabin on LeShip, and you see how huge it is. That, combined with the raining, the waves, the lightning and the ship movement really was my first "wow" moment regarding the graphics. Also, in the forest of Monkey Island, I love all the little insects that fly around now and then. All in all, I found the graphic style really amazing and quite modern. Which is good. Since the world has moved on implacably onwards.

And you know my favorite topic is always the music. I really love how the composers managed to find a style that was quite different from the other games, but still felt very Monkey Island-ish and included all the old themes. But while it had a style of its own, it was also very coherent throughout the game. I'm glad you mentioned the ending "coda" of the title theme. I'm sure many wouldn't notice such details, but it was really fun. And thanks for letting us know about Per Spelmann, I didn't know that yet.

My favorite music cues in the game were: the Scurvy Island music (which was SO ambient with the flutes, and I love how they include some of Elaine's theme in the camp and in the dialogues with her), the whole LeShip suite (with it's alternation of LeChuck's theme, the cemetery music and a completely new theme, in many different versions), the the Big Whoop park theme (especially in the outhouse version, where it adds some electric guitars), the swordfight music with LeChuck after you loose your mask (where the dramatic accordion music reminds me a bit of Curse), and Barebones theme (where the choir passages remind me a bit of Outlaws).

I find it very interesting that you indicate that Land has written the Mêlée mix and McConnell the Brr Muda mix. From where did you get this information. Is there any article or interview with the composers that I have missed?
