A Grumpy Gamer Moves On From A Nearly 10 Year Old Manifesto 06 Apr, 2022 / 3 comments

Unsurprising to most—but apparently shocking to some—is that Ron Gilbert’s "If I Made Another Monkey Island" post from 2013 has passed its expiration date. That is to say, the almost ten-year-old musings may very well not apply to Return To Monkey Island. To quote Ronzo:

NOTE: Now that Return To Monkey Island has been announced it’s important to note that a lot of my views (but not all) in this post have changed. Don’t take anything in here as more than a historical moment. Quoting anything in here as canon will just led to tears.

Now go relive that ReMI trailer one more time to keep riding this high.

Another difference between the manifesto and today is Dave Grossman’s involvement. Having a larger writing room helps solve problems like “how does this vision fit the other parts of canon?” than trying to write it alone.

I'm just a bit worried that if COMI indeed stays canonical, then we won't get Ron's original idea for MI3a. I sincerely hope that he found a way to keep COMI as Canon, and still tell the story he has always envisioned... We will see..

Even in the old blog post he says the story he’d make now would be different than the one he’d have made immediately after 2. And that blog is now from a different era of his career, pre-Thimbleweed Park, etc. I think the point here is, time changes, people change. I don’t think Ron would be making this game if he didn’t want to be making it, so we have to trust that it’s the game he wants to make. That, to me, has always been the most important part of the original blog post.

The danger of the whole “3a” situation is if fans assume that whatever Ron wants also happens to line up perfectly with what they want as fans. But there’s no guarantee that those two things actually align! So as fans we have to ask, do we want Ron to get to make the choices he wants to make? Or is it about us? I’m excited to see what Ron, Dave, and the team deliver. There’s no way it lines up with every hope and dream I’ve had since first seeing the end of Monkey Island 2 as a kid, and honestly if it did I would be scared and suspect a trick. More than anything, I’m excited to be surprised by all the new things I’ll get to see in a new Monkey Island game.

I just hope that Ron finally gets to tell his version of the story the way he always wanted, and Disney won't interfere too much.

I don't mind an optional hint system for the more casual players, but I dearly hope that the game will be difficult.
