LucasArts: Non-Star Wars FPS rumor 07 Apr, 2007 / Comments: 12

According to Kotaku, LucasArts is readying a new non-Star Wars shooter, set in a future East Coast vs. West Coast US civil war. Crips / Bloods?
The first- and third-person shooter features some nifty land deformation schtick courtesy of an advancement in weapons technology. Players will be armed with grenades that can transform the landscape to their advantage, whether it be to establish cover or to reach new heights on a particular level, you'll literally reshape the battlefield. Each splintered faction will also have access to firearms that deploy mines that travel beneath the surface at rocket speeds [carried by sharks? - jp-30] to take out enemies and carve out craters. Expect plenty of flying rocks.
Looks as if LucasArts is trying to launch a new Mercenaries style franchise in the wake of it losing the rights to Mercenaries 2.

Last time I remember, they decided to be dedicated PSP programmers, which is too bad.

    Feb 2007:
    Planet Moon Abandons PSP Exclusivity

?We're no longer a PSP exclusive developer?, said [Planet Moon COO Aaron] Loeb in an interview with consumer website 1UP.com. ?One of the things that was funny was when we made that announcement, people assumed what we were announcing. They sort of read between the lines and assumed that we'd become a handheld developer, which was never our intention with it. The goal of Planet Moon when it was founded was to make original IP and it's still our goal as a company - it's still our striving mission."

It better be humorous, that's all I can say.

Or have a good story and characters.

Reminds me of Armed and Dangerous.. which was awesome. So, I give it a go.

I'd still prefer Maniac Mansion 3, though.

There was a time when each new Lucasarts IP was dribbling thick gobs of character and uniqueness from the mouth...

FPS? Cool weapons? Near-future conflict? Grenades? Unless something remarkable happens, I'm thinking.. technically proficient generica, the likes of which I'll simply never have time or motivation to play. The gaming world has been oversaturated with this stuff for a while already, and now it just spills over the sides without garnering a second look.

I don't know, maybe I'm being unfair and am just in one of those moods where it's easy to be fed up. I suppose we don't know anything about it yet! Not sure I want to though.

"FPS? Cool weapons? Near-future conflict? Grenades?" add lashings of humour to that and you have the rather wonderful LucasArts published Armed & Dangerous from a few years back.

Speaking of which, what IS Planet Moon up to these days?
  • Logic on 07 Apr, 2007, 20:12…
That's very true, though I never thought of that as a Lucasarts title, since not only was it was developed by Planet Moon, but the character that it exuded was so obviously Planet Moon's and not Lucasarts'. One need only have played Giants: Citizen Kabuto (which of course had nothing to do with LEC) to see that.

Anyway, I apologize for my rampant negativity, I know it doesn't exactly do anyone any good. I just so fondly remember the times when gaming was the lifeforce that flowed through my veins, and mixnmojo was the first and last site I visited every day without fail.. but I'm sure we've all seen the change within LEC quite clearly over the years, and feel somewhat differently now, even those who are still enthused by the company. Heck, you only need to read the writing on this very fan site to see how those gradual changes have been perceived by even the most loyal of ye olde fans.

Yeah, Giants: Citizen Kabuto is fantastic.

I've recently interviewed one of the leads at Planet Moon, for the website.
They are actually finishing AFTER BURNER: BLACK FALCON for the PSP.
  • The Tingler on 07 Apr, 2007, 17:15…
Yeah, they had an original game also for the PSP called Infected, which unfortunately got slightly poor reviews and so I don't know anyone who's played it.

Hopefully they'll stray back into the world of consoles/computers/handhelds that people actually own shortly.

I did read somewhere the "PSP exclusivity" was a misquote or something, and they are making games for other platforms too.
