Crikey! LucasArts Classics head downunder 24 Feb, 2007 / Comments: 27

The LucasArts classics line that we reported being released in the UK last December has made its way (with a slight cover-art variation to accomodate the classification labels) to Australia and New Zealand.

The games run straight from the CD, no installation necessary, and run in Win 98SE, ME, 2000 and XP. There is a graphics filter applied on the SCUMM games to soften the jaggies.

Titles in this series include;

- Sam & Max Hit the Road
- Full Throttle
- The Dig
- Grim Fandango
- The Curse of Monkey Island
- Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight + Mysteries of the Sith
- Star Wars Episode 1 Racer

NZ based Gaming store GamePlanet is selling them for NZ$15 (US$10.50) and yes, they do ship internationally.

I am having trouble loading Curse of Monkey Island on both my Windows XP boxes. The install runs just fine, but when I go to play the game it brings up a screen saying I need Direct X 5! I run through that setup where is analyzes my settings and states I am up to date but it still will not let me play the game.

Can someone help me with this. I have a Geforce 7900 series video card.

Oh, man. That was so satisfying playing Full Throttle for the second time. (Hadn't played it in years) I lent my new fangled copy of The Dig to my sister too and she's enjoying it!

just got sam and max and monkey island for 8.99 at jb hi-fi

I havent played my grim fandango new copy yet but it seems identical to my retail version that I bought a few years ago.

I just bought The Dig, Full Throttle, Sam and Max, Grim Fandango and Curse of Monkey Island again. Most of those old games have scratched CDs from over enthusiastic and constant replaying so it'll be good to have mint condition copies!

Has anyone picked up Grim Fandango yet? Does it play from the CD(s) like the SCUMM games in this reissue series, or does it require installation?

  • bgbennyboy on 26 Feb, 2007, 17:22…
I cant speak specifically for this release, but the newer releases of Grim that I've seen still need to be installed. They have the patch integrated and allow you to do a proper full install (all lab files copied to hd)
  • jp-30 on 26 Feb, 2007, 21:18…
Yeah, just grabbed a copy. Min 30MB, max 130MB.

I managed to pick up all the adventure titles yesterday - I already owned CMI and Grim Fandango, but I couldn't pass them up. :)

For those who are having trouble finding them in Australia:

JB Hi-Fi stock only Curse of Monkey Island, Sam and Max, and Ep 1 Pod Racer
Game Wizard (mine anyway) stocked all of them, as did the Dick Smith Powerhouse.
EB gave me a confused look (but then again, the employees there always have confused looks).

I should be grateful for what I got, but MI1 & 2, and DoTT would have been fantastic as well.

I've also seen (in different packaging) for NZ$30; Republic Commando, Knights of the old Republic and Battlefront.

Wish they'd release Secret Weapons over Normandy and Armed & Dangerous at this price point too. A&D is brilliant, and I've never played SWoN.
  • jamessnee1 on 25 Feb, 2007, 11:13…
I picked up republic Commando for $19.95AU, KOTOR 2 for $29.95AU and Battlefront for $19.95AU too, great games that were too expensive for me to purchase when they first came out! I had been particularly looking forward to playing KOTOR 2!
  • jp-30 on 25 Feb, 2007, 18:59…
I don't care much for Battlefront, but Republic Commando is a solid title for a casual FPS player like myself (though what's with those weird Trandoshans?). I also need to pick up KOTOR2, but I guess I should finish #1 first.

    Loving these reissues.

I'm now playing Full Throttle for the very first time. It's always been too expensive on TradeMe, and I've lost the auctions whenever I've bid on it.

Goodness me it's got kick-ass atmosphere, that soundtrack is just incredible. :)

Apparently New Zealand got screwed out of the Sam & Max/DOTT combo.

(And the US got screwed out of: everything. Yay for international shipping.)

    *grumbles*
  • jp-30 on 25 Feb, 2007, 00:25…
We had a S&M / DotT combo pack a few years back in the black-box "Collectors Edition" packaging - the voice track in Sam & Max was corrupt from the Carnival onwards.

And really, I'll happily pay $10 for each (if DotT turns up in this range) rather than feel I'm being ripped off because I didn't get 2 in the one pack.

of course that will be my 4th copy of S&M and my 4th of DotT.

"In New Zealand, The Warehouse is selling these for NZ$9.90 (US$7.00) each. NZ based Gaming store GamePlanet is selling them for NZ$15 (US$10.50) and yes, they do ship internationally.".

oh and I'm selling them for NZ$21 on TradeMe (NZ's eBay equivalent), but really, you'd be better served buying direct from GamePlanet
  • jamessnee1 on 24 Feb, 2007, 22:17…
I live in australia and I got them all! They also offer Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Saga too.
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2007, 22:22…
    At the same price point?
  • jamessnee1 on 24 Feb, 2007, 22:36…
yeah, same price. Now all I need is for them to bring out Shadows of the Empire and Battle for Naboo and my collection will be complete haha
  • jp-30 on 24 Feb, 2007, 22:47…
Shadow of the Empire probably won't get a reissue, because it was made for 1st gen 3D cards (Voodoo, 3DFX etc) and can be a real bitch to get running in XP. (I've never managed to get it to work properly). They'd have to write a decent patch to make it compatible with modern systems, and it seems these reissues are being done by non-US distributors Activision, not by LucasArts.
  • clone2727 on 25 Feb, 2007, 00:56…
It works perfectly here. I have an nVidia GeForce 6800
  • jp-30 on 25 Feb, 2007, 01:17…
oh, that's good news. Still, it's probably one of those games that's tricky to configure for all XP systems, so may not lend itself to a re-release.

Hope I'm wrong though, I love the idea of having these old games play natively in XP without the need for emulators and convoluted setup processes.
